Strategies -
Talk with the Text!
1. Make predictions - before and during the
reading
Important key phrases - "I think...",
"Maybe...", "Perhaps...", "Probably..."
2. Talk about the character's emotions
Surface question - "How are they feeling?"
Deep question - "How do you know they
are feeling that way? (use the text for
evidence)
3. Discuss the setting (use the title and
pictures for evidence)
4. Point out new vocabulary - clarify words

5. Encourage questioning - prompt with
"What are you wondering about on this
page?"
6. Make connections!
Text to self - What does this story remind
you of? (personal experience)
Text to text - What other piece of text
does this make you think about?
Text to the world - What other facts can
you add that you learned from TV, movies,
magazines, newspapers, etc.
7. Identify the problem and solution

8. Visualize - use your 5 senses and
imagination to put yourself inside the
story
9. Evaluate - What is the author's
purpose? Why did they write the book?
Would you give the book a different title?
Do you have a different solution to the
problem?
10. Don't make reading a chore! Have fun,
use interesting voices and expression and
enjoy the connection as you read out loud
to your child and they read to you!
