The Six Trig Functions

1
We can determine all six trig functions from any given
point.

1. P(−1 , 4)

sin θ=¿ csc θ=¿

cos θ=¿ sec θ=¿ ¿

tanθ=¿ ¿ cot θ=¿ ¿

We can also determine them from given conditions:

1
2. sin θ= ∧cosθ<0
3

It is possible to determine the quadrant an angle is in

based on a few functions:

3. cscθ >0∧cosθ< 0

Co-terminal Angles:
Coterminal angles are angles in standard position (angles with the initial side on the positive x-axis)
that have a common terminal side. For example 120°, –240° and 480° are all coterminal.

Quadrant Angles: 90 o , 180o , 270o

Radians
C=2 π radians

1. Which quadrant does an angle of 4 radians fall within?

2. Which quadrant does an angle of -3 radians fall within?

How do you convert between degrees and radians?

Example 1:
4
Convert 45 o to radians

Example 2:

Convert to degrees
6

Fill in a degree measure at each point, in no particular order.

Then go back and fill in the radian measures, again in no

particular order.

whose sides are all equal.

Consider a 45-45-90 right triangle.

1. Let the hypotenuse equal 1.

What would be the side lengths? (no decimals) 45°

2. What would be the six trig functions of these angles?

Consider a 30-60-90 right triangle.

3. Let the hypotenuse equal 1.

What would be the side lengths? (no decimals)

Unit Circle Coordinates:

Summarize:
1. sin 60o =¿

2. cos 60 o=¿

3. tan60 o=¿

4. sin 30o =¿

5. cos 30 o=¿

9
6. tan30 o=¿

7. sin 45 o=¿

8. cos 45o=¿

9. tan 45o=¿

What patterns to do you see in the summary above?

Evaluate the trigonometric function of the quadrant angle. Use your Unit Circle to guide you. NO
DECIMALS.

1. sec ( π )=¿

2. tan ( π2 )=¿

3. cot ( 32π )=¿

4. csc ( 0 π )=¿

5. sec ( 0 π )=¿

6. csc ( 32π )=¿

7. cot ( π )=¿

8. csc ( π2 )=¿
