Positives & Negatives - Addition & Subtraction

I. When adding and subtracting positives and negatives, if you have a minus
sign in the problem, change it to plus a negative. If you have a minus a
negative, change it to plus a positive. Note the following examples:

A. 5 - 7 can be changed to 5 + -7

B. 5 - (-7) can be changed to 5 + (+7)

II. Once these changes have been made, use a number line to help you visualize
what’s going on in the problem. Remember that a negative represents a
move to the left on the number line, and a positive represents a move to
the right. So for the problem -3 + 6, for instance, use the following
technique:
