PATROL
Police patrols play an important role in public service by responding to incidents, deterring and
preventing crimes. It can give a sense of security to people who need protection and discourage those who
may commit crimes in the absence of a patrol. Police patrolling is an indispensable component and function
of police departments. The goals and objectives of police patrol include crime prevention, criminal
apprehension, law enforcement, order maintenance, public services, and traffic enforcement.

METHODS OF PATROL

FOOT PATROL
Foot patrols increase police visibility in busy areas, enhance
our citizens' feeling of safety, and build bridges between
citizens and police. Foot patrol officers are expected to visit
businesses along their beat and to interact with citizens. They
also respond to calls for service within their area. Beat officers
are often able to assist other police officers in identifying
suspects due to the extensive knowledge base they develop
while on patrol. Officers walking the beat have volunteered to
do so and consider it to be a very rewarding task.

ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
 Highly visible  Restricted mobility and area of coverage

 Knowledge of patterns and characteristics  Length of time to patrol

of an area may help to anticipate an incident
before it becomes more difficult to control  Inclement weather prevents or curtails some
activities
 All sense may be use

frivolous lawsuits.
MOTORCYCLE PATROL
A police motorcycle is a motorcycle used by various police
departments. They may be custom designed to meet the
requirements unique of a particular use. A police
motorcycle is often called a "motor" by police officers in
the United States. Similarly, motorcycle units are known as
"motor units" and motorcycle officers are known as motor
officers. The maneuverability of the motorcycle on crowded
streets offer advantages not provided by larger, more
traditional police vehicles. The motorcycle's relatively
small size allows it to get to accident scenes more quickly
when incidents such as traffic collisions slow down access
by four-wheel vehicles. Police motorcycles are also used in
police funerals, VIP motorcades, and other special events.

ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
 A motor bike uses considerably less fuel  Personal Safety. Unlike a car, drivers of

 Registration and taxes for motor bikes are to motor bikes simply because they cannot

 Motor bikes need less repairs and mirrors. Drivers can cut off motor bikes or
maintenance than an automobile even run into them simply because they do
not see them.

BICYCLE PATROL
A police bicycle is a land vehicle used by
police departments, most commonly in the form of a
mountain bicycle. They are designed to meet the
requirements unique to each department. The
maneuverability of these vehicles on crowded
sidewalks and their ability to navigate narrow,
crowded driveways offer advantages over cars,
although a bicycle's top speed is lower.

ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
 Bikes are less threatening than patrol  A bike officer won’t be able to get across
vehicles town as quickly as an officer in a squad car.
 Perpetrators don't notice bike patrols  Those officers are also unable to carry a lot
 Bikes provide environmental and health of equipment
benefits 
 Bicycles cost much less to purchase and
maintain than traditional patrol cars
 Bicycle officers can use all of their senses to
detect illegal activity
HORSE PATROL
Mounted police are police who patrol on horseback
or camelback. Their day-to-day function is typically
picturesque or ceremonial, but they are also employed in
crowd control because of their mobile mass and height
advantage and increasingly for crime prevention and high
visibility policing roles. Mounted police officers can use
their horses to facilitate interaction with members of the
public who would not normally approach law enforcement
personnel. Mounted officers also have a high profile in the
community.

ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES

 having a clearer view of an area, greater  limited carrying capacity
public visibility, and the ability to operate in  lack of speed over long distances
close places.
 The animals respond to silent commands.
 They make all their arrests from the saddle

AUTOMOBILE PATROL
a ground vehicle used by police for
transportation during patrols and to enable them to
respond to incidents and chases. Typical uses of a
police car include transporting officers so they can
reach the scene of an incident quickly, transporting
and temporarily detaining suspects in the back
seats, as a location to use their police radio or
laptop or to patrol an area, all while providing a
visible deterrent to crime.Automobiles soon
became the most important equipment for police
departments. They initially replaced horse drawn
patrol wagons for basic transportation.

ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
 High mobility allowing coverage of greater  Diminished personal contact with the

 Quicker response time to telephone  Little opportunity to develop sources of
complaints. information.
 Greater efficiency in responding to  Marked police vehicle hampers (inhibit)
emergency calls and other called-for apprehension and surveillance operations
services.
 More economical as compared to foot
patrol.
 Provide an element of surprise, especially
when crime is in progress.
 Provide the officer with necessary
protection during increment weather.
K-9 ASSISTED PATROL
The K-9 assisted patrol is becoming more
popular, with even smaller departments beginning to
establish K-9 Units. According to James C. Spurlock
in his article "K-9" in law and order issue of March
1990 : "Along with mainframes and microchips, the

WATER PATROL
Water police, also called harbour patrols, port police,
marine/maritime police, nautical patrols, bay constables or
river police, are police officers, usually a department of a
larger police organisation, who patrol in water craft. Water
patrol units are extremely specialized and are not in great use
except in those areas with extensive coasts or a great deal of
lake or river traffic. boats are the best means to effectively
control violators of water safety regulations as well as to
apprehend drug and guns smugglers. They are also valuable
in rescue operations during times of flooding as well as in
dragging operations for drowning cases.

ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
 Less Maintenance Cost  Water transport is more risky as compared
 Useful for Bulky Goods to other means because there is always
 Useful During Natural Calamities danger of sinking ships or boats.
 It is a slow means of transport. Failure of
monsoon results into fall in the water level
of rivers making navigation difficult.
