A STUDY ON PARAMETERS THAT INFLUENCE THE CREATIVITY IN ART STUDIO

ABSTRACT
Creativity has been defined by cognitive psychologists as “the result of convergence of basic
cognitive processes, core domain knowledge, and environmental, personal, and motivational
factors which allow an individual to produce an object or behaviour that is considered both
novel and appropriate in a particular context”. Studio is a space where old works, works in
progress and the fruits of the artist’s research activities mingle in controlled chaos. The studio
is discussed as a space of discovery, where collected and selected objects and research
materials and experiences resonate with each other and provoke reflection and thinking.
Furthermore, in contrast, the studio is also presented as a space of material engagement and
enchantment, a workshop, where a large part of the methodological practice is based on the
recurrence of manual labour. The work environment, the studio, has a huge impact on the
creative thinking process of an artist.

LITERATURE CASE STUDIES

1)THE LITTLE ART STUDIO

Architects: Chen + Suchart Studio
Location: Paradise Valley, United States
Area: 1400 sqft

The Little Art Studio is an addition to an existing contemporary stucco and glass residence. The
addition of this project to the site provided a backdrop and bookend to an existing desert
courtyard and a gathering area surrounding a fire pit. The interior space is configured as an
open plan to allow the freedom of the studio to be used as a working artist’s studio or gallery
space. Three large movable partitions can be configured in any manner to allow for spatial
diversity and increased surface area for hanging the artist’s work. An integrated artwork
hanging system is embedded and detailed with the drywall to establish a datum in the space
for the constant hanging of artwork for review and display. Bi-parting sliding glass doors are
located directly over the wash in order to celebrate a specific moment in the desert landscape.
The configuration of the windows allows views of the existing courtyard and Camelback
Mountain.

2) ARTIST STUDIO IN SONOMA
Architects: Mork-Ulnes Architects
Location: Sebastopol, United States
Area: 2500 sqft

The main structure is an artist’s studio, and storage building that is clad in barn wood though
inverts the pitched-roof form of the original. The inverted pitch roof creates sweeping double
height spaces for art production and storage, while providing natural ventilation, natural light,
and views out toward the property. Though its form and material may seem foreign, it follows a
similar pitched form as its host and is board-formed using the same barn wood as formwork.
When the concrete had dried the boards were removed and reused as a fence elsewhere on
the property, further continuing a many decades-old material lineage.
