Title : Media as a mediator for Human Rights

ABSTRACT

National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) chairperson: Justice H.L Dattu also said "The media plays
an enormously important role in the protection of human rights, most significantly by exposing human
rights violations and offering the required space for different voices to be expressed and heard in public
discourse,".

Media has been entrusted with various responsibilities of guarding the rights of nations in a democratic,
political system. It empowers the functioning of legislative, executive and judiciary and hence is also
called the ‘fourth pillar’ or “watchdog’ of democracy. Both electronic media and print media work as
eyes and ears of the democracy. It is one of the reason how people exercise their right of information.
Democratic right to know is important in ensuring human rights and safe guarding them. Media plays an
important role in promoting human rights as it has the potential to change people’s opinion and set a
particular agenda towards the positive.

Earlier there used to be vast interpretations, media was considered as one who used to merely reconstruct
an event happening in the society, but in the past few years Media has been successfully achieved the
role of opinion maker and is now an essential creator of mass opinion. The media today has been
entrusted with enormous powers but with that also it is trying to fulfil any superhero motto; with powers
come great responsibility.

The document focuses on two main issues:

1. Media as a medium of awareness for the citizens,

2. Media and its actions for the development of Human rights.

The term "media" in the abstract is not only limited to the mainstream media but smaller sources as well.
