QIP Short Term Course On

“Nonlinear Analysis in Earthquake Engineering”

During 25–29 November, 2019
Introduction
Earthquake resistant design of structures involves design for controlled inelastic behavior. This, in turn, calls
for an understanding of nonlinear transient dynamic analysis of structures under earthquake support
motions. The course aims to provide a contemporary overview of the relevant modeling and computational
issues.

Whom the Course will benefit?

College teachers, researchers, and design engineers with exposure to basics of structural dynamics.

Course Objective
1. To Develop an Understanding of Modeling Inelastic Behaviour in Earthquake Engineering Problems.

2. To Understand the Nature of Earthquake Induced Loads on Engineering Structures and Discuss
Engineering Approaches to Specify these Loads.
3. To Introduce FE Modeling of Geometric and/or Material Nonlinear Behaviour in Characterizing Seismic
Response of Engineering Structures by Time Domain Integration.
4. To Introduce Basics of Hybrid Simulations, Soil-Structure Interactions, and PBSE formats.

Course Contents
1. Review of Linear Structural Dynamics (3 Hours)
2. Nature of Earthquake Induced Ground accelerations. Review of Response Spectra and Smooth Design
