Insulators for HVDC

1. Special glass with low ion conductivity

2. High resistance properties of the glass at high temperatures

3. Adapted glass part design allows to avoid dump between ribs and insulator flashover

4. Special fixing device design protects it from galvochemical corrosion: - zinc sleeve bonded to the pin - zinc collar bonded to the
cap

5. Metallurgical bond of the zinc collar and cast iron cap reaches up to 100%.

6. High resistance to the ionic migration within the glass part reaches a record values as a result of GIG know-how

7. All technical requirements and testing are in accordance with IEC standards.

Requirements for insulators on HVDC and its test are defined by the international standard (IEC) 1325-1995-03.

Application of special insulating materials and constructions is required for insulators on HVDC as special characteristics are
needed for operation of insulators.

Corrosion which is caused by direct current requires for compulsory use of zinc sleeve bonded to the pin and zinc collar bonded
to the cap.

Basic geometric, mechanical and electrical characteristics are confirmed by tests in accordance with IEC 60383-1.

1. SF6 DC withstand voltage test . Insulators are placed in to a chamber with gaseous pressure. Voltage 1.5 times more than DC
withstand voltage (dry) is applied on insulator.

2. Electrical resistance. Measured between the cap and pin under 120 degrees.

Data was received while tests on insulators for HVDC in the labaratory of AO “YuAIZ”

At t=90°C, resistance R=154∙109 O

At t=120°C, resistance R=9,46∙109 O

At t=150°C, resistance R=1,3∙109 O

4. Thermal speed up Insulator is under voltage up to 110 kV during 8 hours at temperature of 80 degrees.

5. Zinc sleeve and zinc collar test Made of pure zinc with purity at least 99,8%. Bonding area of cap and pin should be no less
than 80%.

Selection rules for tests and acceptance criteria are determined by the international standard 61325.
