Now..Series!

Arithmetic series

A series is the addition or sum of the terms of a sequence.

Given a series which includes the first n terms of a sequence, its sum is

Sn=¿ __________________________________________________________.

An arithmetic series is the addition of successive terms of an arithmetic sequence.

For example:

21 , 23 ,25 , 27 , … , 49 is an arithmetic _________________________________.

21+23+25+27 +…+ 49 is an arithmetic ________________________________.

The formula for the sum of an arithmetic series with is:

Sn=¿ =

When do I use each?

1
Let’s try some together!
1. Find the sum of 4 +7+10+13+ … to 50 terms.

2. Find the sum of −6+1+ 8+15+…+141 .

3. An arithmetic sequence has first term 8 and common difference 2. The sum of the terms of the
sequence is 170. Find the number of terms in the sequence.

4. For word problems always: 1.

2.

On Mario’s 18th birthday he was given an allowance from his parents. He was given the following
choices.
Choice A $100 every month of the year.
Choice B $75 the first month and an increase of $5 every month thereafter.

Assuming that Mario does not spend any of his allowance during the year, calculate, for both of the
choices, how much money he would have at the end of the year.
