PTss - TURBINE LUBRICATION OIL COALESCING SYSTEM
1. EQUIPMENT SPECIFICATIONS
TECHNOLOGY
PTss-TOC is based on the Technology developed and ofered by Parker-Velcon, USA. Power Transformers Sales
and Services (India) Private Limited has been Technically Supported as a manufacture's Integrator. PTss-Turbine
Lubricaton Oil Coalescing System is designed to remove free water and solid contaminants from Turbine Lube
Oil.
PROCESS
Equipment consists of a self-priming positve displacement pump and motor designed to work at specifed fow
rate. At the frst stage is a vertcal Pre-flter vessel, a second stage horizontal Coalescer /Separator vessel, and a
third stage polishing flter vessel suitably designed to take care of the Process Oil Specifcatons and its infuent
characteristcs and its desired out fuent requirements. The system is factory equipped and completely tested
with instruments and gauges based on the design schematcs approved for the above needs.
2. GENERAL DESCRIPTION
2.1 PREFILTER STAGE
The frst stage Pre-flter is designed to remove partculate solid contaminants. It contains 0.8 micron nominal
rated synthetc media flter cartridges as standard equipment. The dirt load is monitored by a diferental
pressure switches which indicates when cartridges are plugged with contaminant solids and need to be replaced.
The housing has an air vent and manual oil drain. It houses sufciently no of cartridges suitably designed to take
care of the Process Oil Specifcatons and its infuent characteristcs and its desired out fuent requirements.
The second stage Coalescer/separator vessel removes free water. Finely dispersed water coalesces (grows into
large drops) in the Coalescer cartridges. These drops setle into the vessel sump where collected water is drained
automatcally. The Coalescer cartridges also flter any partculate solids that might pass through the Pre-flter
stage. The dirt load is monitored by a diferental pressure switches which indicates when the Coalescer
cartridges are plugged with contaminant solids and need to be changed. Added to this is a set of Separator Filter
cartridges through with the coalesced oil is fltered to remove more water by the process of repulsion on its
surface. The separator Filters are cleanable and reusable but this process has to be done with great care. A sight
glass on the vessel sump indicates the level of accumulated water. The housing has an air vent and manual oil
drain. It houses sufciently no of Coalescer and Separator cartridges suitably designed to take care of the Process
Oil Specifcatons and its infuent characteristcs and its desired out fuent requirements.
The third stage polishing flter is designed to remove any remaining partculate solid contaminants that did not
get trapped withing the frst two stages. It contains 0.5 micron rated synthetc media flter cartridges. The dirt
load is monitored by a diferental pressure switches which indicates when cartridges are plugged with
contaminant solids and need to be replaced. The housing has an air vent and manual oil drain. It houses
sufciently no of cartridges suitably designed to take care of the Process Oil Specifcatons and its infuent
characteristcs and its desired out fuent requirements.

2.4 CONTROL PANEL
The Control Panel for this Equipment is adequately designed with PLC Control and Motor Control Switch gear for
Complete contnuous operaton of the system. Control Panel is also equiped with a HMI(Human Machine
Interface) LCD Display unit to appropriate display machine status, acknowledge start up operatonal procedures
and control parameters based on the installed instrumentaton. The System Electrical Isolator switch, Start /Stop
and Emergency stop push butons are also housed on the door of the control Panel. Earthing Terminals are
provided with earthing to the skid. Communicaton facility for remote SCADA connectons are possible using
Modbus TCP/IP, Ethernet IP and optonally any other communicaton protocols as per approved design needs.
A strainer with 18 mesh screen is located immediately upstream of the pump and protects the pump from being
damaged by large contaminant partcles. The basket can be easily opened and cleaned without using tools.
The pump is a positve displacement gear pump with rated capacity of 36.3 gallons per minute. A built-in
adjustable pressure relief bypass is set at 5 Bar and will allow fow to bypass internally if pump outlet pressure
reaches the set limit.
On the system there are 4 diferental pressure switches. They display Strainer and Vessels diferental pressure
across each of the housings, and are labeled DPIS-1, DPIS-2,DPIS-3 and DPIS-4.
Each Switch has a red zone as detailed below to indicate the saturaton level of the flter elements used.

2.8 HIGH WATER LEVEL PROTECTION
A high Water/Oil detecton level switch is installed in the flter separator sump to prevent the water level from
reaching the body of the flter separator where it could be passed on downstream. When the water/oil interface
reaches the high level switch probe, it drains automatcally through electric solenoid valve as per operatonal
logic. In case any disturbance in solenoid valve opening afer high level switch detecton, then the system calls for
atenton through high level water alarm and simultaneously system gets shut of.
NOTE:
The high water level shut-of switch probe requires at least 1 minute to warm up sufciently before the high level
shut-of can be reset. If power has been disconnected from the unit or during inital start-up, wait a minimum of 1
minute before resetng the high water level shut-of.
3. INSTALLATION STEPS
1. Inspect the unit for freight damage. If any occurs, call the freight company immediately to inspect the
unit.
2. The TOC is shipped with a complete set of cartridges installed, so it is not necessary to remove the vessel
covers before start-up.
3. Make connectons from the unit inlet and outlet ftngs to the oil reservoir supply and return lines. 2 inch
(or larger) pipe should be used.
4. Connect power to the unit and make sure to check for correct pump rotaton as marked on the pump
housing.
5
4. START–UP PROCEDURE
TOC – Turbine Oil Coalescing System combine the latest coalescing technology with the fnest available
MicroGlass Filter Media to restore Turbine Lube Oil to exceptonally clean and dry conditon.
TOC is contnuous process equipment designed to work in-line to remove free and emulsifed water along flter
contaminants so as to purify up to desired levels.
TOC is designed to be controlled using a PLC and HMI system with auto mode for contnuous functon without
any manual interventon.
The process fow is as described below. To be read afer the system install is complete and ready for process run.
STEP: 1
STEP: 2
Inital Start of the system is done through start push botom provided in Local Control panel(LCP).
STEP: 3
Afer the inital start, the conditon 'A' should be manually acknowledged as ok through HMI (Human Machine
Interface) Touch Panel Interface on the LCP
STEP: 4
Pump will now start afer a small delay of 10 seconds. PreFilter, Coalescing, Seperaton and polishing Filter
Vessels along with the piple lines will start flling up with Oil. Air trapped inside the system will be purged through
the air vents provided on the vessels. Once purging is satsfactory completed, the following valves need to
manually checked for conditon C.
STEP: 5
The conditon 'C' should be manually acknowledged as ok through HMI (Human Machine Interface) Touch Panel
Interface on the LCP. Since the system has already started its functon of PreFiltering + Coalescing + Separaton +
Polishing, PLC will check for Conditon B automatcally and trigger the water drain outlet valve AA051.
Conditon B is automatc checking by PLC for Level Sensors CL201, CL202, CL203 feedback of presence and level of
seperated water in the container. The Valve AA051 is turned on the moment all three CL201, CL202, CL203
senses Water. This Valve remains open untl CL203 is senses Oil. This cycle is repeated and is contnuously
monitored and automated by PLC.
6
STEP: 6
Now as conditon C acknowledgement is done and the system goes in regular process cycle. PLC checks the DPIS
CP201, CP202, CP203 and CP204 connected across the Stainer, Preflter, Coalescer and Polishing Filter vessels
respectvely. If any of these DPIS triggers the set point breach to the PLC, the system gives an alarm and goes in
of-cycle mode by shutng down the pump and popping an alarm message with informaton on the HMI for
relevant acton and can restart of the system by clearing the alarm.
STEP: 7
In case the running system cycle needs to be stopped, this can be done by pushing the Of-push buton provided
in the LCP which turns of the Pump Motor setup.
HEATERS
Heaters in the TOC are independent of the above cycles, Heaters will be automatcally ON by the PLC only when
there is presence of Oil in the system and the Pump is ON.
Heaters will work to the set temperature by the user using a PID controlled feature of the PLC Output Module
based on the RTD Thermocouple TE - 93.
Water stays below Oil since its SG is higher than Lube Oil. Therefore the botom container of the Coalescer vessel
will contain all the water that is seperated or coalesced inside the vessel. To detect the level of water from Oil we
have the Level Switches. These level switches CL201,CL202,CL203 denote High-High, High & Low levels
respectvely. Once they detect water level then the PLC Control system opens the solenoid valve based on the
logic described below. Alternatvely Manual Drain is also provide as a byepass opton.
7
5. ROUTINE OPERATION & MAINTENANCE
2. Periodically check for any oil leakages in Pipe lines, Valves, Vessel & Connectors.
3. The healthiness of flter elements can be read through diferental pressure across the corresponding
flter housings. As mentoned in above procedure, the system will trigger change cartridge alarm for the
corresponding cartridges at the tme of saturaton.
8
6. CARTRIDGE CHANGE OUT
Cartridges should be changed when the system triggers change cartridge alarm.
3. Open the vessel drain valve, open the manual air vent at the top of the vessel, and let the oil drain out.
6. Clean the vessel lid gasket grooves and gasket surfaces and reinstall the lid.
1. When the diferental pressure across the preflter reaches to 27 psi, the cartridges should be changed.
2. Change Out frequency will depend on the amount of solids being fltered.
1. When the diferental pressure across the flter/separator stage reaches to 18 psi, the coalescer elements
should be changed.

10
8. WORKING PRINCIPLE OF TOC
The TOC Series Turbine Lubricaton oil Coalescing Systems remove water and dirt from turbine
lubricaton oil.
A) Partculate Solid Contaminants are removed in the Pre-Filter stage by cost efectve, high surface
area pleated synthetc media cartridges. This extends the life of the specialized flters
downstream.
B) Free and emulsifed water are removed in the flter/Separator stage. Finely dispersed water
passes through the coalescer element and grows into larger drops. These drops collect in the
vessel sump where they are drained. A tefon coated screen separator prevents any small water
drops from entering the efuent oil stream. Fine partculate solid contaminants are also
removed by the coalescer elements.
C) The fnal polishing stage uses synthetc media elements to remove fne partcles.

The C-shaped Bourdon tube has a hollow, elliptical cross section. It is closed at one end and is connected to
the fluid pressure at the other end. When pressure is applied, its cross section becomes more circular, causing
the tube to straighten out, A typical Bourdon tube is coupled mechanically to an indicating needle / pointer
on the other end. This end tube which not fixed moves, this movement being a measurement for the pressure.
This movement indicated by the pointer.

GENERAL
Coalescer cartridges are employed as the first stage in filter/
separator vessels for hydrocarbon fluids. They perform two
functions: (1) coalesce (combine) highly dispersed, emulsified
water particles into larger water drops and (2) filter-out particulate
contaminants.
HOWCOALESCERCARTRIDGESWORK
The top photo shows a highly magnified view of the coalescing
process. Tiny droplets of water contact and adhere to strands
of fiberglass. Flow pushes the droplets along the strand until they Photomicrograph of coalescing process
reach an intersection of strands where they combine with other inside fiberglass media.
droplets (coalesce) into large drops.
These large drops are then carried to the outside surface of the
cartridge. Having a higher specific gravity than the hydrocarbon
fluid, they release and settle to the bottom of the vessel. The
larger the drops, the faster and more efficiently they fall out.
(See bottom photo.) In general, particle removal efficiency increases
with coalescing efficiency. This is accomplished by employing a
tighter, finer filtration media.
Flow direction is from inside to outside of the cartridge. This
minimizes surface velocity and helps prevent the water drops
from breaking up and being carried downstream.
APPLICATIONS
Coalescer cartridges are used primarily to coalesce emulsified
water and remove particles from hydrocarbon fluids. The largest
single application is the filtration of aviation jet fuel. They are also
used with other types of fuels, process streams in refineries and
petrochemical plants, and condensate streams where natural gas
is produced.
Other liquids can be separated if they are immiscible, the specific
gravities differ, and high concentrations of surface active agents
are not present. As a rule of thumb, if a sample of the mixture Coalesced water drops releasing
readily separates in an hour or two, a coalescer can probably be from the knitted sock at the outside surface
used. If the mixture hasn’t separated after 24 hours, coalescing of the cartridge.
probably won’t work.

The “0”, “2”, and “4” Series all-fiberglass cartridges are Inside-to-OutsideFlow
rated at 25, 5, and 3 microns respectively. The “2” and “4” Coalescer Cartridge

ridge life) and water removing capability. They coalesce
gross water, but normally do not remove fine water haze.
The all-fiberglass “6” Series was originally developed for
jet fuel service (the original MIL-F-8901 specification).
With a 2-micron rating, it has proven to be the most cost
effective design in some jet fuel applications. “6” Series
cartridges are also used in gasoline filtration service.
However, it should be noted that the powerful detergent
additives in most automotive gasolines reduce the
coalescing capability of this and other cartridge designs.
“83” Series Cartridges. The 1-micron rated “83” Series
is a pleated media/fiberglass cartridge. The very practical
“83” Series cartridges have become the most widely used
design in applications including gasoline, condensate,
and insulating oil filtration.
“85” and “87” Series Cartridges. The “85” Series is
rated at 0.5-micron while the “87” Series is rated at 0.3
micron. Both incorporate multi-layered pleated media.
The “85” Series has consistently shown superior dirt
holding capacity in the field.

I-6xxMM, and I-6xxA4 Series of coalescers incorporate
a multi-layered pleated media designed to provide
superior dirt holding capacity in the field, combined with
0.4 micron efficiency. The I-6xxC5 (TB) replaces both
the I-6xx85 (TB) and I-6xx87 (TB) cartridges. These
cartridges are available in either threaded base or open-
end configuration. See data sheets 1923 and 1934 for
more specific information on EI 1581 Fifth Edition.

Synthetic Media
Filter Cartridges
FOS Series
FEATURES
DESCRIPTION
FOS Series synthetic media cartridges provide excellent
filtration performance for a wide variety of industrial
applications. They excel in applications where water or
chemicals cause softening or degradation of conventional
resin impregnated cellulose (pleated paper) filter media.
Due to the finer synthetic fibers used, FOS cartridges
have a low pressure drop. Replacing an equivalent size
paper filter will, in many cases, result in improved
filtration efficiency, higher flow rates, longer service life,
and significant cost savings.

General
Separator Cartridges are employed as the second stage in filter/
separator vessels. Their sole function is to repel coalesced water
drops produced by the first stage cartridges while allowing hydro-
carbon fluids to pass through. Water drops settle into the filter/
separator sump and are not carried downstream. All particle filtering
is done by the first stage coalescer cartridge.
How Separator Cartridges Work
Flow direction is from outside-to-inside. The top photo insert shows
water being repelled by the hydrophobic separator medium on the
cartridge’s outside surface. Hydrocarbon fluids, on the other hand,
easily pass through and exit the separator cartridge. Cartridges with Coalesced water drops

Pleated Paper Cartridges cannot be reused and are replaced
at every coalescer cartridge changeout. They are often used with
diesel and other fuel oils which may contain materials that adhere
to TCS cartridges and cannot be cleaned off.
Synthetic Media Cartridges can be cleaned a maximum of two
times. They are intended for customers who do not want to take the
time to clean separators.
