NEWBORN ONESIE

Tiriltunge (named after my favourite field flower the Bird’s-Foot-Trefoil)

Size 0months, 1-3m, 3-6m.

This little onesie was the first thing we put on our daughter after she was born, I wanted
to create a piece of clothing that would keep her damp newborn body warm and
comfortable in a nice and soft material.
A onesie that wraps around the baby is practical and simple, the perfect piece of
clothing for a newborn. Wool and silk keeps the baby comfortably warm, helps draw
moisture away from the body and helps regulate the body-temperature.
What could possibly be better for your baby than getting wrapped up in a lovely
hand knit onesie for the first few hours and days of life.
Use a lovely silk/alpaca blend for the summer baby and a warmer merino or
alpaca for the winter baby. Along with a pair of warm socks and a hat, this is all the baby
needs those first few days.

Yoke:

Along the buttonhole band you knit buttonholes every 4.5 cm. Make sure you
space the last buttonhole about 2.5 cm from the bottom of the edge of the onesie.
There will be one buttonhole in the edge knit around the leg as well.

Work braids according to chart nr 1, front and back to chart nr 2. (make sure to
place the center front in the right location, start working at stitch nr 8 (7) 6 of chart) Start
working the diagrams on the first row of the yoke (this will be your front).

Sleeves are knit in stocking stitch, button hole band and edge stitches in seed
stitch. At the same time as you start working the charts you also start the increases for
the raglan sleeves. You do this by increasing 1 stitch at every marker from the right side
EXEPT the the last marker (this makes for a total of 8 increases for every row) The new
stitches become part of the sleeves, front and back of the yoke. You increase every time
you knit the right side of your work a total of 18 times.

Repeat row 3 and 4 until you have 218, 226, 234 stitches.

After finishing your increase rows put the 42 (44) 46 stitches for the sleeves on
your stitch holders. The rest of the stitches are worked together to form the body of
your onesie. (make sure to add the 4 edge stitches to the body.

Body:

Cast on 4 stitches underneath each arm, (142 (146) 150 stitches total) these
stitches are to be purled on the RS and knit on the WS. Continue working the rest of the
stitches as before. Continue until the body measures 17 (19) 21 cm measured under the
arm. Now its time to divide it into front and back pieces.

Cast off the first 4 stitches, then cast off the next 12 stitches by knitting two
together then casting them off. Knit until you get to the next cable marker and cast of
the next 20 stitches the same way (knit two together, cast off) Knit to the next cable
marker and cast off the next 8 stitches (knit two together, cast off) cast of the last 4
stitches. From this point the front and back are worked separately.

Cast of in the beginning of each row (once on RS and once on WS) 8, 2, 2, 1, 1,

2,1stitches. =13 (17) 21stitches left on needle. Continue knitting until work measures 31

Edge:

Using your 2.5mm needle pick up stitches along the bottom edge of the onesie,
add the stitches from the holding needle as you go. Knit 5 rows of knit 1, purl 1 ribbing.
On the third row make three buttonholes at the center from and one underneath your
button hole band. Cast off.

Put your sleeve stitches on a set of double pointed size 3mm needles and pick up
4 stitches underneath the arm. Knit 1 cm then start decreasing. Decrease 1 stitch on
each side of the two middle stitches under the sleeve. Now decrease every 2 (2,5) 3 cm
4 more times for a total of 5 =36 (38) 40stitches left. Keep knitting until the sleeve
measures 11cm (13cm) 15cm measured underneath the arm. Switch to your size 2.5mm
needles and knit 5 rows of knit1, purl 1 ribbing. Cast off.

Chart 1

Tip:
If you want you can
make the cables twist
in different direction
to make the front and
back symmetrical.
Work then as follows:
Work first cable as
shown, for the next
cable hold the cable
stitch needle in
front ,the next in back
and the final one in
front.

Chart 2

Charts:
When knitting a chart
always start at the
bottom right of the
chart and work your
way up. Stitches that
are knit on the front
of your work will be
purled on the back
unless otherwise
noted. On both chart
start the chart from
the front of your
work.
