MODULE 3 PART 1: TEACHING SPEAKING – AN OVERVIEW

1.0. WHAT IS SPEAKING?

Speaking is defined as the ‘action of conveying information or expressing one’s
thoughts and feelings in spoken language’ (dictionary.com). It is interesting to note
that virtually no-one finds speaking difficult in their native language, yet many
students find it one of the most difficult of the skills to learn in L2. It is also the main
motivation for most students to want to study English in the first place – to be able
to speak to other English speakers.

Speaking is more than just being able to produce sounds correctly or use
appropriate stress and intonation patterns. Students will also have to learn to be
able to use a range of conversational strategies, to be able to communicate in the
different situations they may find themselves in.
