Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement:
The use of educational videos in a classroom will help students to get hooked on the lesson they are about to
have. Videos are found interesting by most students and can help them gain the content in an engaging and
fun way. Using videos and iMovie as a tool for my classroom will allow my students to have an enhanced
lesson while also exploring the creation of videos through a software.
Representation:
This lesson is represented in multiple ways. The video shown will help visual and audio learners to absorb the
content. The worksheet given will also help students that like to reflect on notes and writing information. The
movie the students create will help the hands-on learners to experience explaining the definitions of
weathering and erosion through a fun project.
Action and Expression:
Rather than taking a unit test, students are given the opportunity to create a project using technology and
their voices. They are able to express their knowledge from the lesson given through a project. The project
will also be shared with their peers as well as their families and can be viewed at their home for reviewing
help in understanding the content.
Lesson idea implementation:
The teacher will begin by showing the students the video that was created on Weathering and Erosion. During
the video, the students will be asked to complete a “fill-in-the-blank” worksheet on the different kinds of
weathering and erosion. When they have watched the entire movie, the entire worksheet should also be
filled out. They will use this worksheet as a guide to create their movie. The teacher will put the students into

groups of 3 or 4, depending on the class size, and will give each group an iPad with the iMovie software
downloaded on it.

The students will use their worksheet as a guide to create their movie on the iPad. The students will be
responsible for recording their voices over pictures that demonstrate different types of weathering and
erosion. The teacher will get the students on a website to find photos of each so that students are not doing
random internet searches. They will be asked to find 3 examples of each type of weathering and erosion. The
types of weathering and erosion the students should be aware of and discussion on their video are physical
weathering, chemical weathering, water erosion, wind erosion, and gravity. Once the students have uploaded
their pictures into iMovie and added their voice-overs describing the types of weathering and erosion, the
teacher will assist them in exporting the video. The entire class will come back as a group and watch
everyone’s videos. The teacher will also post the videos on her blog and share them with the Media Specialist
to display on the morning announcements.
Importance of technology: Using a multimedia creating tool was crucial to this project. While the students
could have created a poster or some other project without using iMovie, they would have had less of an
experience of using technology. It would also be much harder to share their work without the use of a
software than can export and share projects with anyone on a media device. There are other types of
software that allow movies to be created and edited in the case that no Apple products are available, as were
used in this project.
Inspiration (optional): Visit https://app.discoveryeducation.com/learn/videos/7eeea62f-7511-452c-82bd-

Internet Safety and Student Privacy: Teachers need to be aware of the internet laws as well as general
internet safety. No accounts can be created for any students under the age of 13 and no students’ personal
information should be displayed on any of the projects that are shared outside of the classroom. Remind
students not to put their name or any other personal information on their projects. Have all parents sign a
video release form in the case that a student is video-taped or photographed. Please check any other Internet
Safety policies if you are unsure of anything during this project.
Reflective Practice: This lesson allows students to create a movie using an incredible creating and editing tool.
While this lesson did not give the students “voice and choice”, the lesson could be adapted to do so or
students could be permitted to select their own topic to create a video about. This lesson could further be
extended by having the students video tape themselves explaining the types of weathering and erosion or
demonstrating each of those through charades or a dance.
