1)     When a metallic element reacts with a non-metallic element, a compound is produced.

The name of the compound contains the name of the metal and the changed name of the non-
metal.

metal+non-metal metal non-metalIDE

iron + sulphur iron sulphIDE

2)      When an alkali metal reacts with water, a soluble base (an alkali) and
hydrogen are produced.
                 alkali
alkali metal + water metal hydroxide + hydrogen

lithium   +    water lithium hydroxide + hydrogen

The hydroxide produced depends on the metal used.

3)      When an alkali metal reacts with oxygen in air, an oxide is produced:

alkali metal + oxygen (in air) metal oxide

sodium + oxygen sodium oxide

The oxide produced depends on the metal used.

4)     When an acid reacts with an alkali, salt and water is produced:

acid (ph 1-6.5) + alkali (ph 7.5-14) salt + water

hydrochloric acid + potassiumhydroxide
potassium chloride + water
The salt that is produced depends upon which acid and alkali react.

5)      When an acid reacts with a metal carbonate, a salt, water and carbon dioxide are
produced:

acid + metal carbonate salt + water + carbon dioxide

nitric acid + calcium carbonate calcium nitrate + water +
carbon dioxide
The salt that is produced depends upon which acid and metal react.

6)        When an acid reacts with metal, a salt and hydrogen are produced:

acid + metal salt + hydrogen

sulphuric acid + magnesium magnesium sulphate + hydrogen

The salt that is produced depends upon which acid and which metal react.
