Reaction of Sulfur with lime stone for de-sulfurization is

occurs after Calcination process

a Cacination reaction @ 600°C to 750°C

CaCO3 → CaO + CO2 ↑
100 kg 56 kg 44 kg

b De-sulfurization reaction @ 700°C to 850°C

CaO + SO2 + 1/2 O2 → Ca SO4
56 kg 64 kg 16kg 136kg
0.875 kg 1kg 0.25kg 2.12kg

64 kg SO2 required 56 kg CaO for desulfurization

or 32 kg S required 56 kg CaO for desulfurization
or 1 kg S required 56/32=1.75 kg CaO for desulfurization
From eqn a: 56 kg CaO produced from 100 kg CaCO 3
1.75 kg CaO produced from100x 1.75/56=3.12 kg CaCO 3
Or we can say that 1 kg S requires 3.12 kg CaCO 3 for de-
sulfurization
75 kg CaCO3 present in 100 kg lime stone
1 kg S required =3.12x100/75 = 4.16 kg lime stone 4.16
