Feasibility Study Report for Fire Cracker Cluster at

Devoke under Mamudpur G.P.


Executive Summary- Fireworks are very popular in our country. These
are extensibly used during celebration of various festivals. Fireworks provide
a grand finale to most of the functions. Fireworks industry is labour intensive
and it involves a degree of skill and specialization.This industry is
concentrated in Sivakasi, Ramanand District, Tamil Nadu.
Corresponding with the present economic development and increase in social
activities the demand of fireworks is continuously growing.Sivakasi being
located at a large distance the supply of fireworks involves additional burden
transport cost which resulted in increase of price of fireworks in the country
and West Bengal in particular.
Therefore fire works cluster at Devoke in our state is highly recommendable ,
profit oriented and labour intensive.
Introduction
 Location- The cluster has nearly about 40-42 units and is located at Devoke
under Mamudpur G.P. of Barrackpore-I Dev. Block.
 Background-History of the cluster- Devoke fire cracker cluster is almost 28
years old. Sk. Taleb Ali one of the proprietor of the fire cracker units started mfg.
fire cracker some 28 years ago. He previously used to work in a unit owned by some
one else at a different address . Then after with some little capital he started mgf.
Fire crackers at his own house .After his success new units grown up in the area and
now it stand to 42 nos.
Vital Statistics of the Cluster
 No. of units- There is at present 42 such units of fire cracker.
 Category of units- All the units are micro in nature.

 Annual Turnover of the cluster-The average turnover per unit per year is Rs. 7
lacs. Thus the annual turnover of the cluster is approx. 2.94 crores.

Existing business process mapping


 Resource in terms of raw-material,finance-Raw material is locally available . The
raw materials are purchase from Bagmore under Halisahar Municipality.The units
are run on own finance. Sometimes they avail of micro finance from local banks.
 Technology-Only mixing of raw materials is the process required in fire cracker
production. No machines are present. The hard portionof the Fancy Sky Function
and Fancy Fireworks are purchased from outside firms.
 Skill- All workers are skilled in preparation of fire works . Even female members
of the family also help in production of fire works.
 Marketing- Marketing is done through middlemen.
 Energy and environment impact-There are sometime explosions in the
firecracker units which takes lifeof many workers.Pollution is the certificate
required as this are polluting units. Health camps may be organized whichis lacking.
 Packaging- Printed boxes are purchased from outside units are packaged with
machines of very low cost.

Weakness-
1. Marketing through middlemen by commission 2. Stakeholders do not pay
interest about formation of cluster.3.Stakeholders do not agree to act jointly in a
same umbrella.4.They will not agree to share land to implement hard
intervention.5.They do not pay heed attention to uplift their technology
upgradation.6. All the stakeholders do not possess fire license, pollution certificate
& other statutory papers.

Opportunities 1.Good market. 2.Skilled labours are available, 3.Availability of


raw materials are there.

Threat –
1.Lack of initiation for upgrading design & adoption of
modern technique & maintain statutory clearance according to
norms.2. Threat on health of workers. Possibility of explosion.

20000/-
4. Programme on Skill up gradation &packaging. Cost involved-Rs.180000/-
