SYSTEM DESCRIPTION NDB Transmitter JTM-30C
In “Multi Site” modus it is possible to monitor & control up to ninety (90) world-
wide remote located NDB Transmitter from one (1) PC over Internet
Through the RS-485/USB or RS-485/LAN remote control interface, the following
parameters may be read and/or programmed:
Carrier frequency
RF power
Modulation type - Morse, Audio or GPS (option)
Modulation depth
Morse tone frequency
Morse keying rate
Four different Morse messages can be typed in as plain text.
The JTM-30C has a built-in non-volatile memory sufficient for storage of the entire
transmitter configuration, and enabling stand-alone un-attended operation. Saving the
configuration in solid-state memory is controlled via the PC interface.
The PC SW provides an event log that records all system events, such as restart, parameter
changes and error events.
In addition to the PC interface, the JTM-30C also offers Remote Control Units that can be
attached via a separate galvanic isolated port to provide simple operation of the transmitter
from a remote location(s). The Remote Control Units may be daisy chained to more than
one location.
As standard the JTM-30C transmitter (Single or DUAL) consists of one self-contained unit
including Antenna Matching and Antenna Tuning mounted inside an IP66 weatherproof and
ruggedized cabinet. The cabinet operates from 24V DC.
As option we may supply an AC Mains to 24V DC Power Supply installed inside the same
Transmitter Cabinet. The Power Supply also provides an interface for battery backup input.
During an AC Mains failure, the transmitter will automatically be powered from an external
24V battery (if connected).
This makes the installation low cost relative to equipment having separate Antenna Tuner
and Transmitter where cables a required to be installed between these two units.

1.5 OPERATION
The transmitter is provided with a Timer circuit for various interval or continuous operation.
The Transmitter is designed for continuous operation (over years) on the selected frequency and with
the selected keying sequence as long as it has sufficient supply of DC-voltage or during a specified
time and intervals based on the configuration programmed from PC.
Dual Transmitters operation. If “MAIN TRANSMITTER” fails due to no modulation or continuous
modulation, or reduced RF–power output (reduced by 3-5 dB or more), the equipment automatically
will switch over to “RESERVE TRANSMITTER”.
(Default time both for Modulation Failure and Carrier Reduction is 1 minute)
Reserve Transmitters operation. If failure of same parameters as above it may be selected through
the PC interface if the Reserve Transmitter shall be switch OFF, or to continue after failure.
For information on Transmitter control via the PC interface please refer to the Instruction Manual for
this option.
1.6 MAINTENANCE
No special maintenance is required for the Transmitter/Tuner, Power Supply and Remote Controls
are required, other than vacuum cleaning.
It is, however, of utmost importance that Antenna Insulator on offshore installations are
cleaned on regular basis. Minimum once every month.

INSTALLATION OF NDB Transmitter JTM-30C
2. INSTALLATION
An NDB antenna (wire antenna or whip + interconnecting wire ) with a length approx. 20m has
been found to give good results in most cases.
At NDB frequencies below 350 kHz, a whip Antenna may not have sufficient capacitance to obtain
optimal tuning. For such installations it is recommended to install a very long Long-wire or a longer
wire between the Whip Antenna and the insulator on the NDB Transmitter.
The JTM-30C is, however, provided with a high voltage capacitor of 200 pF which can be connected
in parallel with the antenna at low frequency operation (e.g. below 350 kHz) enabling correct tuning
even at frequencies down to 190 kHz, and at high frequencies (e.g. above 800 kHz) the same 200 pF
capacitor can be connected in series with the Antenna Tuning Coil.
Below is a table showing the capacitance value relative to frequencies for two alternatives of whip
Antennas from COMROD, Norway widely used for NDB Transmitters.
Values listed below are nominal.
Frequency AS1R AT80B JTM-MFA-1
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
150 kHz No data available 79 pF -
200 kHz No data available 80 pF -
250 kHz No data available 81 pF -
300 kHz 127 pF 83 pF -

600 kHz 138 pF No data available -
700 kHz 145 pF No data available -
• The dominant radiation at NDB frequencies is ground wave, and the vertically polarization
provides the best coverage
• Hence it is recommended to use an antenna which has a vertically wire/mast element to obtain the
best coverage
• As NDB antennas always are capacitive with a high reactive component, it is recommended to use
an additional horizontal element to increase the capacitance of the antenna and hence reduce the
high reactive voltage at the antenna.

B. Switch ON the DC supply to the equipment with the Main Switch/Fuse (F1) located on
the Transmitter Base plate and notice that following LEDs are lit on the Power Control
Unit Board (PCU) input controls :
Yellow LED “Pol. OK” = indicating correct polarity of DC input
Green LED “Volt. OK” = indicating Correct voltage (DC input voltage is
between 20 and 31,0VDC)
If the Yellow LED is not lit, it indicates wrong polarity or no 24V DC supply into
the Transmitter Cabinet
If the Red LED “Overvoltage” is lit it indicates that the DC supply voltage is too
high). DC input voltage higher than approx. 31,5V will cause “DC VOLTAGE
TOO HIGH” indication.
C. If the equipment is configured with an operating frequency, Callsign (ID), correct timing
sequences etc. prior to shipment it will be indicated in the shipping documents.
If so, new configuration of the equipment from a PC is not needed prior to Commissioning.
D. If not, connect a PC with RS-485/USB Cable to the (D-SUB) contact on the Power Control Unit
(PCU) inside the Transmitter Cabinet, or to the (D-SUB) contact on the Remote Control Unit
JTM-30R and configure the Transmitter parameters as described in “4. JTM-30C NDB
Configuration Manual”.

If the equipment is NOT configured, following configuration and setting shall be carried out:
Operating frequency setting
Modulation rate and Audio frequency (95% modulation with 400 Hz is default)
Morse call signal sequence
Mode of operation (continuous – one sequence only etc.)
For equipment configuration see instructions in “4. JTM-30C NDB Configuration Manual”.
3.4 TEST
Prior to start Tuning the equipment to match to the NDB Antenna a simple check can be carried out
to check that the Exciter(s), Power Amplifier(s) and the Power Control Unit (PCU) are working
properly and supply correct RF Power Output.
When pressing the TEST buttons down for MINIMUM 6 seconds it adjust the RF Power Output to
selected RF Power Output value from selected Transmitter (A or B) to an internal 50 ohms dummy
load located under the PCU Board in the Transmitter Cabinet
NOTE !
Activation of TEST switches on the PCU inside the Transmitter, or activation “AUTO
LEVEL” on the PC, shall only be performed if replacing to a new Exciter or to new RF Power
Amplifier.
1. Set the Instrument switch SW1 on the PCU board, to middle position (“I total DC current”)
2. Push and hold down MINIMUM 6 seconds SW3 (“TEST B”) on the PCU (activating
Transmit chain “B”) and check that the DC current on the instrument indicates approx.
65 (6,5Ampere). At the same time check that LEDs marked “B” and “CARRIER” are lit. If
Single Transmitter, only Transmit chain “B” is in operation.
a. Same test can be carried out from PC by activating “AUTO LEVEL” for Transmitter “B”
3. If Dual Transmitter push and hold down MINIMUM 6 seconds SW2 (“TEST A”) on the PCU
(activating Transmitter “A”) and check that the DC current indicate approx. 65 (6,5Ampere) and that
LED’s marked “A” and “CARRIER” are lit.
a. If Dual Transmitter version, Transmitter “A” is the Main Transmitter and Transmitter “B”
is the Reserve Transmitter.
b. Same test can be carried out from PC by activating “AUTO LEVEL” for Transmitter “A”
4. Set the Instrument switch SW1 on the PCU, to upper position (“RF Output”) and notice the meter
indicates approx. 60 when activating switches for “Test A” or “Test B” respectively.
a. The meter will indicate RF output (Carrier only) from the Transmitter(s) to internal Dummy
load.
5. Set the Instrument switch SW1, on the PCU, to down position (“VSWR”) and notice the meter
indicates less than approx. 10 when activating switches SW2 “TEST A” and SW3 “TEST B”
respectively.
a. It indicates low reflected RF Power as the RF output from the RF Amplifiers now are
connected to the internal 50 ohms Dummy load (located under the PCU Board.)
6. Set the Instrument switch SW1, on the PCU, to middle position again (“I total DC current”) and
push and hold down switch SW4 (“IDLE”) and notice that you can hear a click (Relay activated).
a. The deflection on the instrument should now indicate approx. 15 (1,5 Ampere) (xx)
indicating correct Idle current operation of the Power Amplifier (without RF input/output).
(xx) For the older version of RF Power Amplifier (Model 3097) the Idle current shows approx. 3,5A.
b. When releasing the (“IDLE”) switch the Transmitter switches OFF.

Strapping of the Antenna Tuning Coil (ATU Coil), insertion of a 200 pF capacitor, and
position of the Goniometer (tuning handle on the Antenna Tuning Coil) depends highly on
operating frequency and type of Antenna.
Below figures is estimated position (start positions) of strapping on the ATU Coil and estimated
use of the additional 200 pF Capacitor mounted on top (left) of the Antenna Tuning Coil.
3.5.1 Proposed start position for strapping and connection on Antenna Tuning Coil
Prior to starting Tuning and adjusting Impedance marching, remove the Shield Cover in
front of the Antenna Tuning Coil to get easy access to Antenna Tuning strapping.
After finishing Tuning reinstall the Shield Cover again and perform a final fine tuning
of the Antennas Tuning Coil and a final Impedance matching with the Cover Shield on.
Below figure of the Antenna Tuning Coil and proposed strapping combination shows
connections and strapping possibilities on the Coil.
The ATU Coil itself has total 10 connections. Connection “10” is the “high end” of the
coil for direct output, or via 200 pF, to the Antenna.
Connection “1” and “2” is the input to the ATU coil from Matching Transformer.
When delivered from the factory the Antenna Tuning Coil is provided with
six (6) straps connected terminals 3 to 9. I.e. strap “A” to strap “F” connected.
The output from the Matching Transformer initially is connected to ATU Coil connection “1”,
and the Antenna Insulator is connected to terminal 10.

NOTE !
If change of wire connected to the Antenna Insulator or to the 200 pF Capacitor
make sure that these wires are well separated (space distance) to the cabinet.
This to avoid voltage flashover between wire and cabinet.
These proposed strappings and insertion of the 200 pF capacitor is based on a typical
maritime antenna which has a capacity of 120 to 200 pF all over the frequency range
from 190 kHz to 2000 kHz.
For other antennas the strapping combination on the ATU coil and use of the 200 pF
may be different.
Start with strapping (short circuit straps) on the ATU Coil, and use of 200 pF as proposed above.

3.6 Manual TUNING of the equipment (to be carried out inside the NDB Cabinet)
A. Set the Instrument switch SW1 on the PCU to upper position (“RF Output”), pushdown switch
SW4 (“TUNE”) and notice deflection on the meter on the PCU.
B. While holding down the “TUNE” switch, turn the Goniometer (turn the handle on the Antenna
Tuning Coil) and see if you can obtain an increase and clear maximum deflection on the meter
C. If no clear max. deflection on the Meter), the ATU Tuning Coil is outside the tuning range
D. Release the “TUNE” switch and hold down the “IDLE switch a few seconds to reset RF
Power output
E. Change strapping on the Tuning Coil for more or less short circuit
F. Push down switch SW4 (“TUNE”) again and turn the goniometer on the Antenna Tuning Coil
again and see if you now can obtain an increase and clear maximum deflection on the meter
G. If no “Tune” (no clear maximum ) deflection on the Meter), the Tuning Coil is still outside the
tuning range. Select to another strapping and go to “B” above again and until a clear maximum
defection is obtained on the meter when turning the goniometer.
(When correct tuning you shall obtain two (2) clear maximum deflection over one (1) turn of the
goniometer (360 degrees))
NOTE ! The rate of turn ratio between the Goniometer handle and the goniometer
itself is 4 to 1. I.e. you need four (4) turns rotation of the handle to rotate the
goniometer one turn (360 degrees)
H. Now set the Instrument switch SW1 on the PCU to lower position (“VSWR”), pushdown
switch SW4 (“TUNE”) again and notice deflection on the meter
I. While holding down the “TUNE” switch, turn the goniometer very slowly to obtain a clear and
very distinct minimum reading on the meter

J. After finding “Tune” ( a clear and distinct minimum on the meter) notice the deflection.
K. If deflection indicates less than 10 on the meter ( with the meter switch in position VSWR)
you have perfect “Tuning” & perfect Impedance matching
L. If the deflection indicates more than 20 you may need to adjust the impedance matching on the
Loading Transformer for better impedance matching
M. Change the tapping (to left or right direction) on the Matching Transformer strapping field.
See below picture for Impedance matching
N. While holding down the “TUNE” switch, check if the deflection of the meter now becomes less
or higher than first measurement.
O. If less move the strapping further same direction and check the meter reading, as “O” above
P. If higher deflection move the strapping the other direction
Q. When deflection indicates less than 20 on the meter (with the meter switch in position VSWR),
you have acceptable “Tuning” & perfect Impedance matching
R. If pushing down switch SW5 (“RUN”) the transmitter will start operation
S. To stop operation (stop transmitting NDB signals) of the Transmitter push down switch SW 4
(“IDLE”) for a few seconds
After finishing Tuning reinstall the Shield Cover again and perform a final fine tuning
of the Antennas Tuning Coil and a final Impedance matching with the Cover Shield on

The circuit board (AUTO TUNE PCB) receives +24VDC and starts operation when the Transmitter
is switched ON and switch on the Power Control Unit (PCU) marked “ATU ON” is activated
(position up).
Each of the RF Power Amplifiers of NDB Transmitter type JTM-30C has built-in circuits for
monitoring of RF Output and monitoring of VSWR ratio from the Amplifiers.
If the NDB Transmitter is delivered as SINGLE version, only Amplifier “B” is installed.
When the transmitter is provided with AUTO TUNE option the Manual handle is replaced with
a 24 VDC motor with gear (1:500) assembly driving the axis of the Goniometer on the Antenna
Tuning Coil.
An AUTO TUNE PCB is installed on top of the Antenna Tuning bracket. This board receives
24VDC supply voltage and control signals from the Power Control Unit (PCU) board.
The input signals to the AUTO TUNE PCB are the VSWR output voltage and RF Output voltage
from the RF Power Amplifiers.
The motor get source of energy (0 to 24VDC) from the AUTO TUNE PCB.

During modulation (Transmitter sending Morse signals) the VSWR voltage will vary slightly and
may disturb correct tuning. When transmitter sending Morse signals the RF Out DC level from the
RF Power Amplifier generates an increase of the RF Out DC level derived from AM modulation.
The additional DC voltage variation, derived from modulation, is detected and used to stop
operation of the motor during Transmitter sending Morse signals.
I.e. the Motor remains quiescent during Transmitter sending Morse signals.
After finishing sending the Morse signal sequence, which normally shall takes 10 seconds, the
variation on the RF Out voltage will stop and the motor will again be controlled by the VSWR
voltage.
If installing AUTO Tune option on “old” version of NDB Transmitter Type JTM-30C provided
with Exciter SW (such as 7.0 or 9.2 etc.), programming of approx. 10 seconds with NO Morse
signals intervals is required manually by adding minimum 10 “space” characters at the end of the
sequence, This in order to achieve quick AUTO Tune function.
Such programming is not required if the Transmitter is provided with “Manual Tune”.

“* *“ indicates that the transmitter will send two (2) long dash (key ON) each approx. 5 seconds long
NOTE!
Set the Instrument switch, on the PCU board, to position “RF Out” (up) and notice the
reading on the instrument.
Starts AUTO TUNE operation with the switch on the Power Control Unit (PCU) marked “ATU
ON” is activated (position up).
For optimum results of AUTO TUNE, when first time start tuning of the equipment, activate
and hold down the “TUNE” switch on the PCU Board as long as the motor is running until it
finds IN TUNE position. When finding correct IN TUNE position the motor stops and the reading
on the Instrument (RF Out) should show minimum 40 (typical 60).
Turn the Instrument switch to position “VSWR” (down) and notice the reading.
If the reading is less than 25 you have perfect tuning (typical value is 15).
Set the Instrument switch back to default position “RF Out” (up) again.
If not finding IN TUNE within one rotation of the Goniometer axis, which takes approx. 35 seconds
release the “TUNE” switch, press an hold the “IDLE” switch for a few second and release “IDLE”
switch again, and the transmitter will then stop,
Change the strapping to another combination on the Antenna Tuning Coil left or right, activate and
hold down the “TUNE” switch again until the AUTO TUNE finds IN TUNE and the motor stops.
If still not finding IN TUNE position, continue changing strapping on the Antenna Tuning Coil
until finding IN TUNE and the “RF Out” is reading minimum 40.
During activation of the “TUNE” switch the Transmitter only generates carrier (without
modulation). When releasing the “TUNE” switch the Transmitter start to transmit Morse signals
again. (The equipment is in normal operation).

The direction of the motor is controlled from the AUTO TUNE PCB.
NOTE!
Set the Instrument switch, on the PCU board, to position “RF Out” (up) and notice the
reading on the instrument.
The speed of the motor is dependent on the VSWR voltage. If the VSWR voltage is high the motor
run with high speed, but as the VSWR voltage decreases the speed of the motor will be reduced
accordingly. Yellow LED marked “Motor Running” on the AUTO TUNE panel will be lit as long
as the motor is running.
If the VSWR voltage increase the motor will change direction and the VSWR voltage decreases
again and after a few changes of motor directions the motor stop at minimum VSWR Voltage
(Correct tuning). At the same time the Green LED market “IN TUNE” will be lit on AUTO TUNE
panel and on PCU Board.
During normal operation of the equipment, if the conditions of the Antenna change, the VSWR may
increase and the motor may/will start to run.
If the VSWR voltage increases further the motor change direction and passes over minimum VSWR
and after a few change of motor directions the motor stop at correct tuning (minimum VSWR
Voltage). If the VSWR level remains low the motor will remain quiescent and the
LED marked “IN TUNE” on both the AUTO TUNE PCB and on the PCU board will be lit.
If the equipment does not find IN TUNE the motor will run for approx. 2 minutes and stop, which is
approx. four (4) turns rotation of the Rotor. The Red LED marked “ALARM” on the AUT TUNE
panel will lit. This is an indication that the equipment is NOT IN TUNE.
Press and hold down a few seconds the “IDLE” switch on the PCU Board, release the switch and
the Transmitter automatically will be switched OFF.
Check if the reason is related to un-cleaned Antenna Insulators.
70-80 % of all claims regarding problem with NDB transmitter is related to poor maintenance
of the Antenna Insulators.
IF Insulators are OK change the strapping on the coil and/or change strapping of the 200 pF in
accordance with proposed position of for strapping on the ATU Coil and Capacitor.
Activate and hold down the “TUNE” switch on the PCU again and the motor will start rotating and
adjust to Minimum VSWR until it finds IN TUNE.
It may take up to maximum 35 second (one rotation of the rotor axis) to find IN TUNE.
If it still does not find IN TUNE the motor will keep on running approx. 2 minutes until “ALARM”
LED on the AUTO TUNE PCB is lit and the motor stops.

LED “DC ON” is lit when the Transmitter cabinet is powered with DC supply
If LED “Carrier” is lit, when the transmitter in operation, it indicates
sufficient RF power output. (E.g. when the transmitter generates RF Power
output and equipment is tune correctly (under normal operation conditions)
LED “Modulation” will lit (blinking) during periods, when the transmitter
is transmitting a modulated signal (Morse signal)
LED “Main” indicates that the Main Transmitter (“TXA”) is in operation
LED “Reserve” indicates that the Reserve Transmitter (“TXB”) is in operation
LED “Alarm” will only lit if the Transmitter B has registered failure (too low
RF power or failure in transmission of Mores signals), or general failure
In addition the Remote Control Unit has a loudspeaker and a switch to activate
monitoring of Morse or voice output modulation from the Transmitter.
The Remote Control Unit JTM-30R also acts as an Interface Box as it is provided
with a RS-485 D-SUB connector for PC connection.
It also contains outputs (gives voltage free contact) to external Alarm indicators when
following situation occur : “DC input failure”, “Reserve TX in operation” and “Alarm”.
Terminals for Voice Enable (Push-to-talk) for Voice announcements over the Transmitter,
terminals for AM audio (Voice) input to Transmitter for Voice announcements over the
Transmitter, terminals for MSK serial input for DGPS operation, and a Load speaker for
Morse - or Voice monitoring are also included.
LED “Carrier” indicates, if it is continuously lit, that the transmitter in
operation has sufficient RF power output
LED “Modulation” will lit during periods when the transmitter in operation is
transmitting a modulated signal (Mores signal)
LED “Failure” will only lit if the Transmitter has registered failure (too low

4. INTRODUCTION
The JTM-NDB-SW (runs on any PC from Windows VISTA 32 or 64 bit) can be used for monitoring and
Control of the equipment.
This document assumes a Windows 10. based host. The program is installed from the supplied CD.
The installation procedure is explained in details below.
The program enables full control of NDB Transmitter (DUAL and SINGLE versions) connected to the
computer via a single RS485 line. Each Transmitter chain (Transmitter A or Transmitter B) are controlled on
an individual basis, and is recognized by the control program by its card position.
Each Transmitter card (Exciter A and Exciter B) communicates with the control program on intervals of one
second. Analogue readings from the Power Amplifiers and the Transmitter Units (Transmitter A or
Transmitter B) are therefore updated once every second. Commands to the Transmitter are also scheduled on
second intervals. The operation of the Transmitter Control program is described in chapter three.
NOTE ! Installation of this SW requires that you have “Administrator” rights to set up your PC.
The JTM-30C is shipped with one (1) support CD that contains the following items:
.
• The JTM-NDB-SW Control Program
• Driver software for JTM-485 link operation
• Full product documentation for the NDB
• Copy of JTM-485/ LAN Configuration Software ( Lantronix/ Grid Connect), and Software for
setting up secure RS485/ LAN connection
• Tuning videos (matching antenna to NDB Transmitter)
At this stage, the PC Control Program is ready for operation. The default user name is “admin” and the
password is “exciter”. It is recommended that user names and passwords are personalized by the user. This
will be explained in chapter 4.5.
4.1.4 Un-installation of PC SW
To remove the JTM-NDB-SW from your computer do step 1 in the Upgrade section. The directory C:\NDB\
must also be deleted.
4.2 Configuration
4.2.2 Logging on
The first window to appear is the login dialog window. To proceed, it is necessary to enter a correct user ID
and a password. As soon as a correct entry code is supplied, the login window will disappear, and the
Transmitter Control Program Transmitter panel page appears.
If an incorrect user ID or a wrong password was entered, the login window will give a message about the
fault, and ask for a corrected entry. Access to the Transmitter Control Program is barred until a correct entry
is received.
After a correct access code is recognized, the program will spend the first few seconds in an attempt to
establish contact with the Transmitters. If one is found, the program will select the control page for the
Transmitter that is present, and perform a Read operation to retrieve the configuration of that Transmitter.
If two Transmitter chains are found, Transmitter A will be selected, as this by default is the active unit.
4.3 Overview
Upon a correct entry of user code and password, the transmitter control page is displayed.
The JTM-NDB-SW has five pages or views as indicated by the tabs
• Transmitter A panel giving access to the Main Transmitter unit
• Transmitter B panel giving access to the Stand-by Transmitter unit
• The System page providing configuration as well as user access data.
• A Log page giving system history (Event Log), as well as control of log file erasure.
• A Calendar page is supplied for convenience.
The upper part is split in three columns showing (from left to right):
• Status lamps. There are lamps for Active status, Transmitter status, Carrier status and Modulation
status. This section is called “TRANSMITTER STATUS”
• Next, there is a display area which is updated every second. There are displays for transmitted
power, transmitter current and impedance matching, heat sink temperature, and a reading of the air
temperature inside the transmitter. The Transmitter Power indication has an additional function in
that there is a GO/NOGO colour lamp on the left hand side of the field. When this lamp is green, the
transmitter operation is correct, and there is sufficient power. When the power is below 70%, this
lamp turns yellow, indicating that the output power is too low. This indication only appears when the
Transmitter is active.
NOTE ! Indicated TX Power and the colours is for indication only and are only reliable
when the RF Output impedance matching for the amplifier is optimal.
To the left and on the right there are ten (10) control buttons. They are called the “CONTROLS” section.
By clicking on these buttons you select the operational mode of the Transmitter.
Controls Controls
In order to report the response from the Transmitter, different background colors are used. This is true for
the status lamps as well as for the buttons. An active function is indicated with a green background,
while an inactive function will have a grey background.
When a button is clicked, the grey background is changed to yellow. At the same time the button
command is relayed to the Transmitter. The Transmitter reports back to the PC when the command is
received and processed. The button will then change to green or back to grey depending on the context.
• Exciter SW version. This field displays the SW version reported from the Transmitter.
• Transmitter size ( W PEP)” In this area you may configure maximum RF output (W PEP) for the
actual RF Power Amplifier connected
• Alarm action. In this field there is a selection of different actions that the Transmitter will take upon
detection of an alarm. Certain authorities have a deviant requirement for action. Reset action. This
field is updated by the Transmitter at program start or when requested. It shows which action the
Transmitter will take upon power-up reset when switched on or after a power outage. To change the
• Reset action. In this field the action to be taken by the Transmitter after DC supply of energy has
been disconnected. “HALT” means shall be switched OFF. “RUN” mean shall be switched ON
If any of above parameters under “SETUP” or “CONFIG” has been changed enter the System tab page
and make the desired selection. You must then return to the transmitter page(s) to Update and Save the
new configuration.
When the (action carried out ) action chosen in the System page is loaded into the Transmitter(s) and
saved in flash, a Read command will produce the new settings in this field. The text is grey for the A-unit,
because it has no relevance in this position, however, it is useful to know the configuration of each
Transmitter chain.
The middle right part of the screen (“SETUP”) is reserved for Transmitter configuration. This part is
available only to users with administrator access rights. The following controls and selections are
available:
• Frequency control. In the field RF Freq [Hz] the carrier frequency may be entered in Hertz. The
factory default frequency is 410000Hz. In the field just above, the same frequency is displayed in a
more readable format. Frequency range from 190kHz to 2MHz may be selected in steps of one
Hertz.
• Modulation type. The following modulation types are available as standard or as options:
1. Morse N0N/A2A. The selected Morse sequence is keyed automatically.
2. Audio A3E. The signal at the audio port (200-3000Hz) is modulated onto the carrier.
3. MSK via RS232 (Option)
4. MSK direct, via an analog port. (Option)
5. Morse A1A. On-off Morse keying of an un-modulated carrier.
• Carrier level control. In the entry field RF pwr [%] the carrier level may be set to % of the
maximum RF power from the RF Power Amplifier of the Transmitter. An entry of “60” will be
understood as meaning 150WPEP carrier output from the RF Power Amplifier 250W PEP , or
optional 60W at 100WPEP. This is correct only after the Auto Level function has been used to find
the correct correction factor.
• AM level [%]. The AM level control is active for the N0N/A2A and A3E modulation types. The AM
level may be set to % of full modulation. The default is 95% modulation.
• MSK (Baud) rate. When the MSK modulation type is selected, the modulation rate may be selected
as 50, 100 or 200 baud. Optional service
• In the field “Sequence Type”. This control selects the sequence to be transmitted. It is possible to
transmit one sequence while editing another. A change of Active sequence must be updated to the
Transmitter before it is valid.
0. Continuous: The selected sequence is sent continuously without expiration.
1. Until: The selected sequence is repeated until the interval timer expires (see below).
2. Once every: The selected sequence is sent once every time the interval timer expires.
• Interval [min]. For sequences 2 and 3 the interval is selected in this field in minutes. The interval
range is 0 to 1000. The default value is 35 minutes.
• In the field “RATE (CPM)” you set the Morse speed in characters per minute.
The keying rate in average characters per minute is selected in this field. The keying rate range is 5
to 100 cpm. The default value is 10 cpm
• In the Field “TONE” Morse tone [Hz]. This field selects the frequency of the tone used for A2A
modulation. The frequency range is 150 to 1020 Hz. The default value is 400 Hz.
• “Morse Message”. There are four possible Morse sequences that can be programmed and selected.
Each sequence consists of up to 100 characters. A space between words is interpreted as three pause
units. A sequence end is transmitted as seven pause units. A star character (*) is interpreted as a long
dash lasting 64 units. The available character set is given in Appendix A. At the end of each
sequence the transmitter will automatically insert a sequence of spaces equal to about ten seconds in
order for the optional Auto tune function to settle correctly.
NOTE !
It is important to initiate the UPDATE button to download the new configuration to the Transmitter in
question. The UPDATE button may be pressed at any time, and will download a snapshot of the
parameters in the computer display. After download has been initiated, the button will change its
background colour to green, to indicate that a new set of data has been sent. When the button colour
changes back to grey this is a receipt from the Transmitter that the parameters are actually changed.
When this button is pressed another change becomes apparent. The SAVE button turns yellow. This
indicates that the Transmitter configuration has been changed, but is not yet stored in permanent
memory. Without a save operation, the Transmitter will return to its previous configuration after a
power-down.
When the SAVE button is pressed, the current Transmitter configuration is saved in permanent
memory in the Transmitter, independent of the PC program configuration. Please be aware that the saved
information is equal to the displayed information only if the save was preceded by a read or an update
operation. When the save operation is successfully completed, the Transmitter reports back to the
computer, which in turn makes the save button grey once again.
If DUAL Transmitter make sure that UPDATE and SAVE has been done for both
Transmitter A and Transmitter B.
After finishing configuration of Transmitter A and/or B, go to the System menu and initiate
“SAVE SETUP TO FILE”.
The SYSTEM page is accessible only for users with administrator rights. It handles the program access
rights, two sets of Transmitter set up, as well as the configuration for alarm and reset actions.
The two set-up options are the following:
• One option is the Factory Default setting. This cannot be altered by the user and is only used to reset
the Transmitter to initial conditions.
• There is also a possibility for the user to save setup on the local PC, a user defined set of parameters.
This function is useful to copy configurations between Transmitters and to save an important set of
parameters.
The alarm configuration allows a user to meet local regulations for system shut-down in the case of an alarm.
The reset configuration allows the administrator to configure each transmitter for its response to a power-up
event. The transmitter can be made to auto-start or to idle from reset.
For either configuration the operator must down load the set-up to the appropriate Exciter unit from its tab
page and saved in permanent memory by pressing the SAVE-button.
There is also a control to select the power level of the attached Transmitters. The levels available are
100WPEP, 250WPEP, 500WPEP and 1000WPEP. This selection is used to give a correct reading for output
power on the power display. To make the configuration permanent it is necessary to save the configuration to
each exciters, by pressing the buttons “UPDATE” and “SAVE” in the Transmitter A and Transmitter B
windows. (Please mind that changing the power level does not do anything to the NDB Transmitters actual
RF output).
The Access Rights field is a user editable field, where user ID’s, corresponding passwords and access rights
may be specified. There is no limit or required length for the ID and Password selections, but the Rights field
must be either a “1” (for limited rights) or a “2” (for full rights). Whenever the Access Rights field has been
changed, the SAVE button at the lower part of this field must be pressed, for the change to be permanent.
4.6 Operation of our NDB Transmitter over LAN / Internet from your own PC

In addition, the character ‘*’ is interpreted as a 64 element long tone.
4.13.1 How to receive and install configuration files from TELE SUPPLY AS.
A configuration file received from JACOTRON will be a file called config.txt and will be delivered through
email or on CD. This file must be copied to the directory C:\NDB. The copy process will probably prompt
the Operator with a question if the present file shall be replaced. Answer “yes”.
Now, start the NDB Control Program and select the SYSTEM page. Press the button “Restore Setup from
file”. The new configuration is now loaded in the PC.
On each of the two transmitter pages press the UPDATE button to download the configuration to the Exciter
boards. Then press the SAVE button to have the new configuration stored in permanent memory.
This completes the configuration update process.
This Installation guide will help you install the interface box software. It is advisable to let an IT
technician/professional do this software part of the installation.

CAN ICES-3 (B) / NMB-3 (B)
The most often reports related to problem with NDB Transmitters is due to bad insulation on the
Antenna Insulators
The reason is that oil and/or salty air covers the Insulators and you may get high voltage
flashover. It is of utmost importance that these Insulators are cleaned from time to time.
In more than 70-80 % of all cases where it has been reported poor coverage of the NDB
it is the Antenna itself or the installation around which causes the problem.
After cleaning the Insulators check if the insulation is acceptable by using a 1000 V Megger.
Disconnect the wire to the antenna Insulator inside the Transmitter cabinet and
connect one side of the Megger to the Antenna Insulator, and the other to ground.
In dry weather it shall show NO leakage (Infinite resistance).
If measuring 50 MOHM or less it will cause problem with Tuning and coverage
of the radiation.
Replacing Insulator(s) with new ones is the best option.
After finishing Antenna insulation test reconnect the wire to the antenna Insulator inside
the Transmitter cabinet again.
Activate and hold down switch marked “TUNE” on the PCU, set the Instrument switch to VSWR
and carefully adjust the handle on the Goniometer on the ATU Coil to minimum reading. Value
less than 20 is acceptable
If supplied with AUTO Tune capability it will adjust itself automatically.
After finishing this TUNING check make sure that both locks on the door of the Transmitter
cabinet are properly fastened again
6.4.1 General
If the equipment fails, for some reason, the service will be based on replacement of modules.
Repair of modules will have to be made at Tele Supply AS
There is no access to adjustments of the equipment other than operation of switches on the PCU
Board and operation from the PC.
3. Same test can be carried out from PC by activating “AUTO LEVEL” for Transmitter “B”
5. If Dual Transmitter version, Transmitter “A” is the Main Transmitter and Transmitter “B” is the
Reserve Transmitter.
6. Same test can be carried out from PC by activating “AUTO LEVEL” for Transmitter “A”
7. Set the Instrument switch SW1 on the PCU, to upper position (“RF Output”) and notice the meter
indicates approx. 60 when activating switches for “Test A” or “Test B” respectively.
8. The meter will indicate RF output (Carrier only) from the Transmitter(s) to internal Dummy load.
9. Set the Instrument switch SW1, on the PCU, to down position (“VSWR”) and notice the meter
indicates less than approx. 10 when activating switches SW2 “TEST A” and SW3 “TEST B”
respectively.
10. It indicates low reflected RF Power as the RF output from the RF Amplifiers now are connected to
the internal 50 ohms Dummy load (located under the PCU Board.)
11. Set the Instrument switch SW1, on the PCU, to middle position again (“I total DC current”) and
push and hold down switch SW4 (“IDLE”) and notice that you can hear a click (Relay activated).
The deflection on the instrument should now indicate approx. 15 (1,5 Ampere) (xx) indicating
correct Idle current operation of the Power Amplifier (without RF input/output).
(xx) For the older version of RF Power Amplifier (Model 3097) the Idle current shows approx. 3,5A
12. When releasing the (“IDLE”) switch the Transmitter switches OFF.
NOTE !!
Before replacing any module or parts switch OFF the DC supply to the Transmitter by
deactivating (push down) Fuse F1 inside the cabinet.
If you have a DUAL Transmitter version it is relatively easy to replace modules or Spare parts or
modules to see if the problem follows one of the modules.
5. If the instrument (in position VSWR) indicate no, or very low display, the problem may
be with the Exciter or the RF-Amplifier
If Dual transmitter press and hold down switch “TEST A” one (1) minute and observe the
instrument readings on the PCU. Following typical values should be displayed:
RF Out = 40 to 60, I Total = 50 -60 and VSWR less than 10 (typical 5).
If VSWR shows less than 10 and the RF Out indicates over 40 it indicates that both “Exciter A”
and “RF Power Amplifier A” are working OK.
If Single transmitter press and hold down switch “TEST B” one (1) minute and observe the
instrument readings on the PCU. Following typical values should be displayed:
RF Out = 40 to 60, I Total = 50 -60 and VSWR less than 10 (typical 5).
If VSWR shows less than 10 and the RF Out indicates over 40 it indicates that both “Exciter B”
and “RF Power Amplifier B” are working OK.
Trouble shouting must be concentrated to find the status around Impedance Matching
Transformer, Antenna Tuning Coil / 200 pF capacitor, the strapping on the coil/capacitor and all
wire connections from Matching Transformer to the Antenna Insulator.
If all of this is Ok the problem lays on the Tuning of the Antenna Tuning Coil, but most likely is
due to unacceptable Antenna, and especially one or several dirty Insulators.
Set the instrument in position RF Output and adjust the Goniometer to maximum deflection.
If supplied with AUTO Tune capability it will adjust is self automatically provided the left side
switch on the PCU is in position “Auto Tune ON”.
Follow the instruction for tuning of the equipment as described in document
“3. JTM-30C Commissioning”.
If Dual transmitter press and hold down switch “TEST A” minimum six (6) seconds and observe
the instrument readings on the PCU, followed by press and hold down switch “TEST B” one (1)
minute and observe the instrument readings on the PCU.
It appears very strange if both transmitter systems indicate low VSWR.
NOTE! Make sure that you switch OFF the DC Supply (F1) before unplugging or
plugging in the Exciter again.
If problem with one transmitters system replace the Exciters.
On the PC push “IDLE” and check if the “CURRENT” on the PC display indicate approx. 3,5 A
for Amplifier “HPA Model 3097” or approx.1A for Amplifier “JTM-30HPA”
6.6.1 General
Exactly how to verify if the problem is related to an Exciter or to an RF Amplifier is often not
easy without having a second Exciter and/or a second RF Amplifier available.
For a DUAL version of JTM-30C it is very easy to swap the Exciter and see if the problem
relates to the Exciter or RF Amplifier.
NOTE! Make sure that you switch OFF the DC Supply (F1) before unplugging or
plugging in the Exciter again.
Technical support by using Tele Supply Quick Support (Team Viewer) is an excellent application.
If you need help from Tele Supply AS to clarify you may contact us on E-mail on
post@telesupply.no, or on telephone +47 63884399.
Prior to contacting us it is preferable that the PC used as PC for monitoring & control of NDB Transmitter
runs the program "Tele Supply Quick Support" in advance.
If this is not done you may still get support from us while on service on site by doing the
following:
1. Visit our Website www.telesupply.no when you use your own PC.
2. Enable / Run "Tele Supply Quick Support»
3. Inform User ID and Password to us (example: Your ID 680622835 and Password 4029)
by calling us and give this info.
4. Then we can go directly into your / their PC (which is associated with NDB equipment)
and direct control and check / monitor all the NDB transmitter parameter as if we were
there.
5. If your or customer PC also is equipped with microphone and speaker, we can from here
(Tele Supply AS) start your microphone with voice communication between us.
6. 7. It is also possible to simultaneously transmit video, but it is assumes again that your /
their PC also is equipped with a video camera (The new laptops normally have this).
Video is not particularly useful.
7. This service assumes, however, that there is at least 0.5 Mbit /s data rate in both directions
between us. At Tele Supply AS we have 10Mbit / s in both directions.
I.E. We can with Tele Supply Quick Support remotely control and monitor the NDB
transmitter from our location (Tele Supply AS, Norway) while over the same IP
connection can talk to each other.
