step in same direction. May be

row); also chromatic.
Neighbour Step - step Approach by step in one
note/ Auxiliary direction, resolve by step in
note the opposite direction.

Appogiatura Leap- step Leap from a consonance to a

dissonance, then resolve by
step to a consonance. Both
accented (dissonance on a
strong beat) and unaccented
(dissonance on a weak beat).
Escape Tones Step – leap Step to a dissonance, then
‘resolve’ to consonance via a
leap. Usually unaccented.

Changing Tones Step – leap Consonant note moves to

– step both upper and lower
neighbour note (either order)
before returning to original
consonance.
Anticipation Step - A weak beat dissonance
Repeat caused by the new consonant
note coming in too
early/before the harmony
(thus causing a brief
dissonance).
Suspension Repeat – Consonant note is held or
step (down) repeated as the harmony
changes, making the note
dissonant (on a strong beat). It
then resolves downwards by
step.
Retardation Repeat – Same as a suspension, but
Step (up) resolves upwards.

Remember: consonance – dissonance – consonance

(Unless the style of music suggests otherwise ☺ )
