 Title : Mangrove forests as trapsfor marine litter
 Author: Cecilia Martin a, Hanan Almahasheer b, Carlos M.
Duartea
 Publication year: 21 January 2019

2. Research goals : To see about the role of mangrove against the

garbage in the oceans (mangrove forests act as trapsfor marine litter).

Problem thatoccured : The litter was more abundant where the mangrove
density washigher, and object distribution through the mangrove stand
often depended ont their shape and dimension.

Methode that use : Visual censussurvey.

 Performed in 16 regions of the Saudi Coast in the Red Sea and 4
regions in the Arabian Gulf.
 5 out of 20 forests surveyed are located along the coast of the city
namely 1 in Yanbu, 4 in the Arabian bay, 2 others are in 2 km from
the in habited coastal center and the remaining 13 are located in 7
km from the coastal city with 7 others in the islands uninhabited
off shore island.
 The selected mangrove forest (station) consists of Avicennia
marina species with a tree height of about 1.5 m - 5 m. Except, in
one young forest whose heightisless than 1 m.
 4 - 10 transects / stations installed, except for one station where
only one transectis installed. In total 96 transects were installed
with a total area of 6286 m2.
Research Result :
 Trash that dominates in the red sea is plastic material (plastic bottles,
plastic bags, and oil bottles. In the Arabian bay, what dominates are
ropes, plastic bags, food bags.
 The amount of waste increases with distance from the maritime
traffic area, distance from the beach, and the density of mangrove
forests. Garbage is trapped inpneumatophore.
 Maritime traffic is a source of garbage that spreads up to 15 km.
 Other activities at sea are also driving the spread of garbage in the
sea.

Conclusion :
 The mangrove forest acts as a waste trap.
 Maritime traffic is one that drives the spread of waste.
 Another mover is wind.
