Universal Design for Learning  
UDL includes multiple means for students to represent what they have learned. Through iMovie students can 
add in, pictures, text, video, audio and voiceovers. This platform incorporates multiple different types of 
media that come together to make a movie.  
Lesson idea implementation:  
The teacher will introduce the lesson with a moon phase video that introduces the 8 phases the moon cycles 
through. After introduction the students may choose to make a video on one of the three subjects: an 
explanation of why the length of day and night change throughout the year, the phases of the moon and how 
the sun effects these phases, or an explanation of how the Earth’s orbit, with its consistent tilt, affects 
seasonal changes. After students pick one of these subjects, they will conduct research on the topic. After 
conducting research, the students will gather pictures to help explain their topic, the students may find these 
pictures or draw or create their own. Students may also create a physical model that they can video and add 
into their movie. The teacher will demo on how to create a movie with iMovie and the students may use iPads 
to create their movie with. After students have produced their movie, the class will have a movie preview day 
and watch all of the movies, they must write one fact they learned from each movie.  
Importance of technology: It is important to use a multimedia tool for this project so students can model the 
moon and its orbit and visually represent their topics. Their movie will show how and why things work the 
way that they do, this project could be done without the movie, but it would not be as effective. With the

movie students will be teaching each other since they can pick between three different topics, they will not all 
be exploring the same content.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy: One issue that could arise is that students may want to conduct open 
searches on the internet. I would provide students with links to informational websites they could use to pull 
information from as well as providing books for them to look through. Before beginning the project, I would 
send a note home to parents explaining the project and how the class will be using technology to complete 
the project. I would make sure I had permission slips for all of my students to use technology.  
Reflective Practice:  
I think students will enjoy this lesson, and they will be teaching each other. They will feel proud showcasing their work to 
the class. This lesson could be further extended by having students explore what would happen if we didn’t have a 
moon, or if the earth didn’t tilt just so? Students could easily add to their movies in the iMovie app.
