Exam – Modern and Smart Material
Information

Remember, modern materials have useful properties built in, it is also a class of materials that have
been developed through the intervention of new or improved processes. However, smart materials
react to changes in the environment, they change their properties in response to stimuli e.g.
temperature, light, stress, moisture or PH. They often return to their original state when the stimuli is
taken away – the changes are reversible.

16. What does SMA stands for?

SMA STANDS FOR (SHAPE MEMORY ALLOYS).

(2 marks)

17. What material are the nanoparticles made of in antibacterial fabrics?

Nano titanium dioxide is currently used in textiles for UV protection

and researchers are looking into its applicability for antibacterial
purposes by combining nano titanium dioxide with nano silver.
Such equipped textiles should be able to attack microorganisms,
degrade organic pollutants and neutralise bad odours.

18. Name a smart material.

In simple words, smart materials are those materials which adapt themselves as per
required condition. Some common examples of SMs are Shape Memory Alloy.

(2 marks)

19. For the material you have named in question 3, state the property that makes it a smart
material.

Shape Memory alloys are metals that exhibit the properties of pseudo-elasticity and the
Shape Memory Effect. Current popular Shape Memory Alloys include NiTi (Nickel
Titanium), CuZnAl, and CuAlNi.The load on the Smart Memory Alloy is increased until it
turns into Martensite.

Figure 1 shows a pair of sunglasses

a) State one smart material that could be used to make a part of this
product in figure 1.
Photochromic materials as they can be used for the design of
optical switches, optical data storage devices, energy-
conserving coatings, eye-protection glasses, and privacy
shields. Photochromic materials and systems have

several important uses depending on the rates of the
optical transformations.

20. Explain one advantage of conductive ink.

Using conductive inks makes it quick and easy and quick to
produce a simple circuit board; no need for computers and
etching of PCB boards. Using conductive inks is less
polluting than the traditional chemical-etching manufacturing
method of PCBs.

22. Name two properties of Photochromic glass

Photochromic lenses may be made of glass, polycarbonate, or another plastic. They are
principally used in eyeglasses that are dark in bright sunlight, but clear in low
ambient light conditions. They darken significantly within about a minute of
exposure to bright light, and take somewhat longer to clear.

25. List two advantages and disadvantages of Graphene

Graphene has a lot of other promising applications: anti-
corrosion coatings and paints, efficient and precise
sensors, faster and efficient electronics, flexible displays,
efficient solar panels, faster DNA sequencing, drug
delivery, and more.

Some of the major disadvantages of graphene include

but are not limited to; Being a great conductor of electricity, although it
doesn't have a band gap (can't be switched off).Scientists are working
on rectifying this. The main disadvantage of graphene as a catalyst is its
susceptibility to oxidative environments.
