FLAGSHIP EVENT’S PROBLEM STATEMENT

PARAPLEGIC PATIENTS - Those who are paralyzed from the waist downwards

PROBLEMS FACED ARE:

● Existing devices are not safe and easy to use.

● The patient requires training in using the devices.

● Most of the devices are expensive.

● The patient alone cannot use the devices. Needs a caretaker.

● Some devices demand sitting balance for the patient.

PROBLEM STATEMENT:

A device that can help paraplegic patients to transfer from bed to wheelchair and vice-versa
without external help which is safe and cost-effective and does not require prior training. Most of the
paraplegic patients are aged ones. So the device should be as simple as possible.

SOLUTION-1:
CONSTRUCTION:

The basic wheel chair assembly is used for this wheel chair also. The wheels will be the base of
the wheel chair. Wheels will be connected to the frame. The frame in turn connects with the legs of the
chair. The chair legs may be like normal chair as four legs or like a chair using in saloons such that with
single leg. The single leg itself enough to withstand the total load of the patient. If it is single leg type the
jack used to rise and lower the chair will be placed inside the leg itself. So, the single leg will be hollow
type. But in our project we are using the four leg type to reduce complexity in design and to reduce cost
in turns. After the legs there will be another frame which encloses the legs and increases the support and
strength. Till now the legs and frame will make of hollow mild steel tubes

Then the important solution is arrived after this base assembly only. This base construction is
common for the both solution. There will be a rail over the frame which will be having some extension on
the both sides of the frame. The extra rails can be folded and placed with the chair limits. These rails are
used to slide the chair sitting portion to the right extreme or left extreme this movement.
Then the sitting portion of the chair will be placed above the rails. This portion will be having a
fixed back rest and side arms which is for support will be having a sloping inner side which will be wedge
like side which can be altered into horizontal surface also by using the hinges. This slope will be placed
over the rail. The rail will be used as support for the arm to place as horizontal surface. The side support
with sloping geometry will be facilitated to lock in the rail support.

WORKING:

Let us have assumption that the bed is in the left side of this table and the patient with paraplegic
have to be shifted from the bed to the chair.

The wheel of the chair is first will be locked in the required place. The height of the chair will be
adjusted to the required height of the bed.

After this initial setting of the table then the sitting portion of the chair is moved to the right
extent as the bed in the left position the chair should be moved to the left extreme position over the rail.
Then the position of the sitting portion will be locked. Then the left side supporting arm of the chair will
be released and then the sloping left arm support inner side is can be used to shift the patient from the bed
to the chair. The weight of the patient may be high or low by using this slope for shifting smoothens the
function of shifting from bed to chair or vice versa.

SOLUTION-2:
CONSTRUCTION:

The frame and leg with jack will be common for this type also but the rails and side arms
with wedge structure will not be used here.

The wedge like structure will be connected in the front side of the chair which can be
made as foldable with use of hinge or may be connected as tray like structure which can be
pulled under the seat whenever shifting is done or it may be used for the patient relax their legs
over the chair which will leading a sophistication with support for legs.

WORKING:

The patient will be directly placing their legs over the sloping surfaces on the front
surface which is pulled out as tray or hinged like surface which is placed over the bed. Then the
patient himself using his hands or by sliding over it can shifting him to the chair from the bed or
vice versa can happen in easy manner.
