I. Syllables
A syllable is a unit of organization for a sequence of speech sounds. It is
typically made up of a syllable nucleus (most often a vowel) with optional initial
and final margins (typically, consonants). Syllables are often considered the
phonological "building blocks" of words. They can influence the rhythm of a
language, its prosody, its poetic metre and its stress patterns. Speech can usually be
divided up into a whole number of syllables. For example, the word result is
composed of two syllables: re and sult.
II. Stress
1 .Definition
Stress or accent is relative emphasis or prominence given to a certain
syllable in a word, or to a certain word in a phrase or sentence. That emphasis is
typically caused by such properties as increased loudness and vowel length, full
articulation of the vowel, and changes in pitch. The terms stress and accent are
often used synonymously in that context but are sometimes distinguished.
The stress placed on syllables within words is called word stress or lexical
stress, some languages have fixed stress.

2. Importance
- Mistakes in word stress are a common cause of misunderstanding in English.
Stressing the wrong syllable in a word can make the word very difficult to
hear and understand, even if the speaker can be understood, mistakes with
word stress can make the listener feel irritated, or perhaps even amused, and
could prevent good communication from taking place.
- Stress plays a very important role in creating the intonation of the sentence.
When emphasizing stress, each word and the whole sentence will have a
certain level of up and down, making attachment to create flexibility. Not
only makes the sentence more attractive, more natural but also expresses
emotions very well and brings high communication efficiency.
- Using stress in communication will help you feel more confident. Because
of the stress, the words you pronounce are all correct and can convey to the
listener; communication fluency.
- Examples:
‘Samples
3
‘Carton
‘Purple
‘Rainy
‘China
‘Happy
-Examples:
Re’lax
Re’ceive
Di’rect
A’mong
A’side
De’cide
About 80% of two-syllable words get their stress on the first syllable.
4
There are, of course, exceptions to this rule, but very few nouns and
adjectives get stress on their second syllable.
Verbs and prepositions usually get stress placed on the second syllable, but
there are exceptions to this too.
Note: There are many two-syllable words in English that can be pronounced
in two different ways. The stress change also changes the part of speech of the
word.
- Examples:
3. Proper nouns
Proper nouns are specific names of people, places or things. For example:
Jeniffer, Spain, Google.
The second word is always the one that takes the stress
- Examples:
North DAKOTA
5
Mr. SMITH
Apple INCORPORATED
- Examples:
‘Orderly
‘Silently
‘Lovingly
‘Manager
- Examples:
‘Rarity
‘Optimal
6
‘Gradient
The stress is going to be on the syllable right before the suffix. This applies
to words of all syllable lengths.
- Examples:
- Examples:
8
-Examples:
‘Graphic
Hyper’tension
Tele’vision
Nu’trition
reve’lation
Note: Native English speakers don't always agree on where to place the
stress on a word. For example, some people pronounce television as "’Television"
while others say "tele’vision."
- Examples:
De’mocracy
Ge’ography
9
‘Allergy
