 Situation Analysis
Fred Westen ,CEO of Hathaway Jones, an American luxury apparel retailer, has spent the past four years struggling to
revamp his company's image from stodgy to an avant grande youth oriented fashion. Despite sales of $5 billion in 2006
Hathway Jones had fallen on hard times and direly needed a jolt in new direction. Hence Fred announced an ambitious
plan to elbow in on China's fast-growing luxury goods market which was growing by 70% a year. Incontinently he gets a
call from an old prep school friend. Fred agrees to meet his friend's daughter, Mimi Brewster, to interview her to head up
the company's flagship store in Shanghai.
Mimi Brewster, MBA from Stanford, had graduated cum laude from Berkeley majoring in modern Chinese history and well
versed in Mandarin and local dialect due to growing up in China. After graduation she was working with Eleanor Gaston a
fashion chain for 4 yrs and has two successful brand relaunches in her portfolio. Employers have described her as
aggressively creative, opinionated and risk taker.
Fred is quite impressed with Mimi after the first meet she even winked at him before leaving, but a routine Google search
by Virgina turns up information about her that could affect the company's performance in China. News stories and photos
reveal that when Mimi was fresh out of college, she'd participated in nonviolent but vocal demonstrations - including one in
front of China's San Francisco consulate - against the World Trade Organization.Virginia’s apprehension towards Mimi

of their lives for the world to see and should mimi’s past actions nullify her present credibility. . If he hires Mimi, and her
past conduct becomes widely known, his company's expansion overseas could be set back. But rising stars like Mimi don't
walk in the door every day. Should Fred hire her despite her on-line history?
PROBLEM STATEMENT
The most important issue to be addressed in the case is “Should Fred hire Mimi despite her
on-line history?”

OPTIONS
The following are some of the options that Fred can take up:
 Hire Mimi for china’s operations
 Do not hire Mimi
 Hire Mimi for American operations but lead a strategic team for
Chinese operations

RECOMMENDATION:
 It appears that the best course of action for Nicholas is to promote the cost
accountant and help her in acquiring the CMA designation after addressing
Paul’s dismay.
ACTION PLAN:
 Nicholas should first speak to Paul and explain the requirements of job and the toll it
can take on his health
 He should then promote the cost accountant and monitor her work for few months
 The company should also encourage her to acquire CMA designation to continue with
the position.

CONTINGENCY PLAN:
 In case every option fails Nicholas can involve the US executives to resolve the issue
