Coronavirus checks:
Flattening the scam curve
by Karen Hobbs, Assistant Director, Division of

There’s a lot to worry about when it comes to the
Coronavirus crisis, including the new ways scammers
are using the economic impact payments (so-called
“stimulus checks”) to trick people. To keep ahead of
scammers who are trying to cash in on those payments,

Westby continued from front
The judging has helped the market animal
owners, giving them constructive criticism.
“I had faults and had a few things you can fix,”
said Westby. “I knew that going in. We got narrow
on the back side.”
Work starts on the market beef after the calves
are shipped out. She keeps one back for her 4-H
project. That calf is put in with the replacement
heifers. She was also one of the seniors to win a
scholarship.
“We start feeding them in February,” said
Westby.
Her market beef weighed 1.320 pounds and
was sold for $7.50 a pound to Hi-Line Ford. She
also raised a lamb, which she had in December. It
weighed 137 pounds and was sold for $5 a pound to
First Community Bank-Hinsdale.
Two years ago she had a light weight grand
champion lamb, which won lamb rate of gain at 3.61
pounds a day. She also raised a horse, which as a
three-year old won her colt to maturity award. She
also won the horse sportsmanship award and horse
senior reserve champion award. And she was the
round robin senior champion.
This year she won the beef herdsman individual
award, Red Angus live placing and Red Angus steer
grand champion. And, of course, beef overall grand
champion award.
Westby’s advice for the younger 4-H members
is:
“Just stick through it,” she said. “It’s a lot of
work. There are a lot of things you have to do, but
it’s worth it in the end, totally.”
Brooke also has a sister, Blaire, and brother, Ty,
which helped each other.
“Blaire and Ty, they’re both close to me so we
lean on each other,” said Brooke, who did give advice
to both in the past.
