CHAPTER 3

METHODOLOGY

Research Design and Approach

This study will be in qualitative approach using phenomenological design to

describe the role experiences of being a house husband. Descriptive
phenomenology is concerned with revealing the “essence” or “essential structure” of
any phenomenon under investigation – that is, those features that make it what it is,
rather than something else. Bueno (2016) stated that as an epistemological
perspective, phenomenology seeks to identify the single, invariant essence of the
lived experience. Thus, phenomenology as a research strategy involves a set of
methods and analysis techniques that are used to identify that essence. Creswell
(2007) considered the following features involved in conducting a phenomenological
study:

 An understanding of the philosophy of phenomenology, including the concept

of bracketing.
 Research questions are developed that are focused on having the participants
describe their experiences.
 Interviews are conducted with 5-25 participants who have experienced the
phenomenon being investigated. The questions asked focus on how they
have experienced the phenomenon and what contexts affect their experience.
 The data are analyzed, typically by first dividing the transcripts into specific
statements, clustering the statements based on psychological concepts, and
then bringing these clusters together to create a general description of the
experience.
 The final description of the experience provides an understanding of the
underlying, invariant structure that is common for all instances of the
experience.

Since phenomenology is focused on the lived experience of the participants, the

researchers must “bracket,” or set aside, any pre-conceived notions of what that
experience is. This is not to say that they are simply ignored. Rather, as with
qualitative research in general, these pre-conceived notions are examined and made
explicit in order to be transparent about any biases the researcher may have. By
making these biases apparent, it is then possible to set them aside when examining
the data.

Sampling Procedure

The researchers aim to use purposive sampling to obtain a minimum of 15

and maximum of 30 respondents whose status is a house husband in Catbalogan
City will be selected to partake and be the respondents for this research as
purposive sampling represents a group of different non-probability sampling
techniques. Also known as judgmental, selective or subjective sampling, purposive
sampling relies on the judgement of the researcher when it comes to selecting the
units that are to be studied.

To gather the data need for the study, the researchers must select
respondents that has at least one year experience of being a house husband, in
which the term house husband

Data Analysis

The researchers will use hermeneutic analysis type of phenomenology.

Hermeneutic analysis will enable the researchers to elicit an in-depth understanding
of meanings of, for example: human practices, culture, works of art, and texts.
Understanding is produced through systematic interpretation processes. These
processes are known as hermeneutic circle. Interpretation of details affects the
interpretation of the entire phenomenon; reviews of these interpretations produce a
deepening understanding of the phenomenon.

Data Gathering Tool (Instrument)

The researchers will use in-depth interview and a semi- structured interview.
This method of interview has features of both structured and unstructured interviews
and therefore use both closed and open questions. As a result, it has the advantage
of both methods of interview. In order to be consistent with all participants, the
interviewer has a set of pre-planned core questions for guidance such that the same
areas are covered with each interviewee. As the interview progresses, the
interviewee is given opportunity to elaborate or provide more relevant information if
he/she opts to do so. Questions and order of presentation are determined. Questions
are open-ended, as the interviewer records the essence of each response.

The questionnaire as the main instrument will be constructed and validated by

the experts to be sure that it would be able to gather the needed data, and to ensure
that it would fit to the target respondents.

Ethical Considerations

 Participant’s Informed Consent

The researchers will inform the participants of the purpose, nature, data collection
method, and the extent of the research prior to commencement. Additionally,
during the data collection process, participants can withdraw if there is a chance
that they feel uncomfortable of if they are not willing to continue. The researchers
will guarantee that no participants will be put in a situation where they might be
harmed as a result of their participations, physical or psychological as stated by
Trochim (2000). Adhering strictly to all the ethical guidelines serves as standards
about the honesty and trustworthiness of the data collected and the
accompanying data analysis which the researcher will comply to.

The researchers will ensure the confidentiality and anonymity of the participants
by maintaining the removal of any identifying characteristics and that the
participants’ names would not be used for any other purposes, nor will
information be shared that reveals their identity in any way.
