JULY 2017
Time: 2 ¼ Hours
INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES
1. Write your name and index number in the spaces provided above.
2. Sign and write the date of the examination in space provided.
3. Answer ALL the questions in the spaces provided in the question paper.
4. All working MUST be clearly shown where necessary.
5. Mathematical tables and silent electronic calculators may be used.
6. This paper consists of 6 printed pages. Candidates should confirm this.
(i) the temperature change when magnesium reacts with excess hydrochloric acid
Procedure 1
Using a burette, measure 50cm3 of solution B and place it in a 100ml beaker. Measure the
temperature of solution B and record the value in table 1. Put the magnesium ribbon in the 50cm3
of solution B in the 100ml beaker, and immediately start a stop clock/stop watch. Stir the mixture
completely with the thermometer making sure he magnesium ribbon remains inside the solution
as it reacts. Measure the temperature after every 30 seconds and record the value in the table 1.
Continue stirring and measuring the temperatures to complete table 1.
(i) Plot a graph of temperature (Y-axis) against time on the grid provided. (3mks)
-labeling both axes √(½mk) -units not a must but if present must be correct
- Scale both axes √(½mk) grids half way used from lowest to highest plots vertically and
left to right horizontaly -plotting √(1mk) for 10-11 correct plots, √(½mk) 8-9 plots correct
(0mk) for less than 8plots correct, curve√(1mk) –a line that is not touching a point ahead should
break(broken line)

(ii) On the graph, show the maximum change in temperature, ∆T, and determine it value. (1mk)
Transfer all the solution obtained in procedure 1 into a 250ml conical flask. Clean the burette and
use it to place 50cm3 of distilled water into the beaker used in procedure 1. Transfer all the 50cm3
of the water into the 250ml conical flask containing the solution from procedure 1. Label this as
solution D. Empty the burette and fill it with solution C. Pipette 25cm3 of solution D and place it
in an empty conical flask. Add tow drops of phenolphthalein indicator, and titrate solution C
against solution D. Record your results in table 2. Repeat the titration of solution C against
solution D and complete table 2.
