Critiquing an Art

1. Patay Gutom

Description: In the painting, we can see Imelda Marcos with so many bodyguards
around her serving her unlike those people who are on the left side carrying a sack of rice
even though it was already sunset, which means its time to go home. And we can also see
the car parkerd with a plate number “8” which means it’s a car of a politician.
Analysis: The painting has a lot of lines, curved lines and different shapes such as
rectangle and triangle. Its space is maximized based on the canvass, its value is bright, and
its colors are majority of blue, and there is also a color of pink which pertains to the sunset.
Meaning: I think, the author wants us to see in the painting is how our society is in the
past and up until now. How the rich people are above us while the poor people are serving
them with their own strength in exchange of money which they needed for their selves and
for their family.
Context: An artwork of Leonilo “Neil” Doloricon in the year 2015 to show the Marcos
Administration in the past years.
Judgement: As I first saw the picture, it reminded me of how the people are working
hard, how much their perseverance is to make their life better. But I notice how the rich
people are living, just like in the picture, how comfortable their life is while the poor people
are sacrificing their health and time. In this painting, for me, it shows me the inequality we
have in the past and up until now in the present.
2. Agos
Description: A lot of Filipinos in the middle of the battle against the western civilization
that represents their country through the flag they are holding and there is also the light
emerging from the top right of the painting.
Analysis: There are lines but mostly the lines are thin, and its form is 3-Dimensional. The
spacing of the painting is acurate for its theme because its about a battle and its color as
well is very accurate, a combinaton of light and dark colors.
Meaning: The author is telling us to patronize what we owned, to patronize what our
country is producing and not what the other countries giving or introducing to us. To
patronize what our fellow Filipino has made.
Context: An artwork of Antipas Delotavo about the bloody battle of Basi revolt between
the Ilocanos and Spaniard at the Bataoay River.
Judgement: For this second picture, I could relate it how the western civilization are
right now, example of this is how people now into K-Pop, Kdrama, or any Hollywood actors,
that how much we fight that the western civilization will be out of our country, it will not come
true unless we stop watching videos or stop patronizing the products that relates to western
civilization which I know will not happen today or in the following years.

3. Peace Be with You

Description: The first thing that I notice in the painting is the female at center imitating
the Virgin Mary. The female who is holding a baby which the umbilical cord is shaped like
dove and the alibata at the top and also the soldiers at the bottom of the painting which is
not very clear not until you look to it closely.
Analysis: What caught my attention is the color of the painting because it was so dark to
which I think it symbolizes blood. The lines are more on shading the paint brush, the
spacing is well maximized especially the female at the center. The painting is a 3-
dimensional form.
Meaning: I think what the painter is telling us, not actually but what he is asking to us
from this painting is, “Do we want to have a war just because we want our country in
peace?” “There are so many solutions for us to have peace in our country, why do you want
a war?”
Context: An artwork of Edgar Talusan Fernandez pertaining to differen religions across
the country and it also pertains to the war period
Judgement: As I saw the picture, to be honest, I really don’t understand what it means
because the colors of the painting is contradicting of what the painting name is. Maybe it
was all about a war, which at the end of the war, there would be peace.
4. Edsa Bala

Description: The upper body of a man holding a big rifle, and, on his uniform, there is a
Philippine flag and the watch he is wearing is at 12:00. And the line of the people below, i
think, it pertains to his bullets.
Analysis: Its color is black and white which is very accurate because its not too dark nor
too light. The spacing is well maximized that the painter uses all the space needed for him
to deliver his message clearly.
Meaning: It shows the unity of the people in that time, their willingness to do whatever is
needed for their freedom, through a war or not, they are willing to fight for their freedom
Context: An artwork of Jose Tence Ruiz, who is a Filipino Asian Modern and
Contemporary Painter who was born in 1956. The painting is all about the EDSA People
Power Revolution on how the people unites for their freedom from the Marcos regime.
Judgement: I pick this picture at the last because, from the name of it, I can tell that it
was, maybe, all about the EDSA revolution which many people participates for their
freedom from the Marcos’ “batas-militar” at that time, which I think the man holding the gun
symbolizes.
