Designing Thickener and Classifier

The dimensions which are commonly specified in thickener design are its cross-sectional

area and depth. Batch settling data is used for determining the cross-sectional area; however,

tests used in generating this data are not perfect simulation of the settling characteristic in a

continuous thickener. Batch settling test is performed in a cylinder. Net volume is not being

specified, instead the system is defined by zones. In gravity settling, solids which settle out of a

zone are replaced with equal volume of suspending fluid.
