Basics on Cattle Breeds

The first thing you should know is the difference between a diary breed and a beef
breed. Cattle that fall into the diary breed are cows that produce milk for the market. While beef
cattle are bred for meat. Some things breeders look for in dairy cattle are : volume of milk they
produce and Butterfat content.Some things breeders look in for beef breeds are: muscle growth,
Temperament, Birthing ease, and birth weights.

Let’s go over some common breeds of cattle:


❖ Holstein Friesian cattle: large black and white cattle. These have very sharp
markings One of the most common dairy breeds. Hereford cattle : medium size
beef cattle. Mostly brown and white. Belted Galloway: looks like an Oreo.
Medium sized. Used for beef.
❖ Red angus: medium size beef cattle. Red colored.
❖ Shorthorn: medium - large size cattle. Used for both diary and meat. ( 5th slide)

Cattle reach sexual maturity around 15 -18 months depending on the breed. They are
pregnant for around 9 months. The average lifespan for cattle is 15 - 20 years.
