EENG587 – Wireless Communication

HW1: Lectures 1 and 2

1. Explain briefly why the radio propagation in wireless channels is more challenging than
other communication medium like electrical cables or optical fibers.

2. Give two examples of current wireless systems and indicate for each system if the signal
propagation is done in indoor environment or outdoor environment or in both
environments.

3. What is the difference between large-scale propagation effects and small-scale

propagation effects? The path loss, shadowing, and the multipath are small or large-scale
propagation effects?

4. A base station located at a height of 30 m transmits to a user at a distance of 5 km at a

frequency of 900MHz. The height of the receiver is 2 m.
The transmitter’s power is 10 mW and the gains of transmitter and receiver antennas are
8 dB and 3 dB, respectively.
a) Find the received power in dBm using the free-space path loss model.
b) Find the received power in dBm using the two ray path loss model.
c) By measurement, we got a received power of -100 dBm at the user.
Which of the models above (free-space model or two ray model) is more accurate (gives
closer result to the measured received power)? Explain why.

5. Find the critical distance dc under the two-ray model for a macro cell in a suburban area
with the base station mounted on a tower or building (ht = 20 m), the receivers at height
hr = 3 m, and fc = 2 GHz.
Is this a good size for cell radius in a suburban macro cell? Why or why not?
