NEED ANALYSIS

Design a Baby Pram for Street Vendors to solve

the social problems faced by the street vendors in every
busy commercial and market street in India’s cities, small
towns, and villages.
The street vendors, especially women, who are
parents of young children below age 5, who cannot afford
daycares or have access to babysitters, often carry their
children to the street.
Design a system by considering their nature of work,
and other basic requirements with main focus on cost
effectiveness.
MARKET
STUDY
Rising awareness towards baby care products
and accessories has led to sustainable growth
of the baby care industries. This flourish of
baby care market is further
triggered by rise in average annual
income, higher standards of living and
growing urbanization rise in birth rates in
developing nations; and hence the spike in
pram and stroller market.
In addition, growing trend of traveling among millennials and baby boomers has
widened the scope for easy traveling with babies, thereby increasing the usage of
baby stroller. Increasing birth rates across developing countries, along with rising
safety concerns, have widened the scope for baby strollers. The product
showcases features such as convenience, ease of use, and cost
effectiveness, which is likely to promote the usage of baby strollers. In addition,
growing trend of traveling across generations has created demand for easy and pain
free travel with babies. Thus, parents prefer to incorporate an additional seat for their
infants through the travel system stroller at the time of car transport. Growing
working women population across countries has developed the
need to carry their babies to different places with greater
convenience, which has widened the scope for baby strollers. Moreover, growing
trend of nuclear families has increased the demand for these products as
parents need to take their babies with them every time they move
out of the house.
According to a report from RnR Market Research baby stroller and
pram market is projected to grow at 5% compound annual growth rate by 2020.

Yet another report by Market Watch published April 18, 2019 suggests that the
worldwide market for Baby Pram and Stroller would grow at a CAGR of
roughly 2.4% over the next five years, which would reach 2500 million
US$ in 2014 from 2017 million US$ in 2019. Source

In 2015 the global consumption of stroller market was about 40

million units and Asia occupied over 50% of the market (China for
43.76%, rest of Asia for 8.40%), owing to the huge population base of China.
Closer home, in India, baby mobility equipment
industry, which was struggling in its initial years,
has now boomed with tremendous rise
in sales volume as well as value since
Indian parents are gradually adopting them
according to their needs and affordability. Though
demographics suggest that urban areas dominate
the market heavily as compared to the rural ones,

the silver lining is that even rural areas

are gearing up for a push. Online platforms
like FirstCry, Amazon, Flipkart etc. have also added
value to the market due to boom in e-commerce
business. Source
Market Insights for Street Vendors in India

According to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty

Alleviation, there are over 10 million street vendors in India
as of 2014. This number has certainly spiked due
to consistent rise in birth rates. It is mainly the
nature of work of street vendors that makes baby
pram an indispensable need for them, especially
the women street vendors who are naturally responsible for
child rearing.
Large population of vendors, increased per capita income and the sheer
absolute necessity of baby carriers for women vendors as
they go door to door carrying their children, make baby pram a
befitting market for the street vendors. Prams explicitly designed for vendors
not only to suit their needs but to equip them and yet cheap enough to be
affordable to a class with an average daily income of ₹ 295 can even
flourish the market.

CUSTOMER
STUDY
● Availablespace to keep baby pram
is less in a congested market for a
street vendor, so design need to be
very much optimized. It should be foldable.
● Roads/ pathways are uneven, so there is
going to be too much shock on
wheels/baby pram while moving on
roads
● There are too many mosquitoes in
streets
● There is too much noise from different
sources in a street/ road, something
should be done to reduce noise
● Street vendors stand in open sky , so
weather is a concern, material for
baby pram must be selected wisely to
avoid sun heat, and rain.
● Both hands of street vendors are busy while moving vegetable carts, or supporting
tokri on head when they come to market or going back to home etc. so if baby
pram can be hang on shoulders from back or front side like a
backpack would be good point.

● Baby pram canbe hanged to the vegetable cart to keep both hands
of the vendor free.
● Bad Odour issue in market.
● Babies pee a lot so there should be some storage
space to keep dirty/ wet cloths.
● Street vendors are poor they won’t buy costly baby
pram. It needs to be cost effective.
● Babies are prone to infections so material of the
baby pram should be non toxic etc. Eco-friendly
material should be used.
