Philosophy of Nursing Statement

Being a nurse means providing just and equitable care to all human beings. I believe that

every patient has the right to the highest quality care regardless of age, gender, race, religious

belief, culture, or personal beliefs. As nurses it is our duty to asset aside personal biases or

prejudices in order to provide equitable care.

Being a nurse means always putting the patient first. A nurse is a patient’s primary

advocate, and it is our duty to always put the needs and values of the patient at the forefront of

their care. It is our duty to be able to advocate for the patient when they do not have their own

voice, and to go out of our way to make sure that patients receive fair treatment.

Being a nurse means providing compassionate and holistic care. I believe that humans are

whole systems, and that healing occurs both physically and mentally. I believe that is a nurse’s

duty to treat the needs of patient’s physical and mental wellbeing in order to provide holistic

care.

Being a nurse means doing all that you can to practice nonmaleficence. It is our duty to

be alert and attentive at all times and do all that we can to keep the patient away from harm. This

involves performing thorough assessments, listening to the patient, and being involved in the

patient’s plan of care.

Lastly, being a nurse means taking care of yourself. I believe that nurses can only give

the best care they can if they also take care of themselves. It is our duty to make sure that we are

emotionally and physically healthy enough to be able to provide high quality care to our patients.

We can only care for the needs of others in a just, equitable, compassionate way when we also

care for the needs of ourselves.
