LUBRICATION

Lubrication

• The principle of supporting a sliding load on a friction reducing film.

The prevention of metal-to-metal contact by means of an
intervening layer of fluid.
Lubricants

• The substance of which the film is composed. All liquids will provide
a sort of lubrication. But some do it better great than others.
• What do we need from lubricants?
• Metal wetting ability
• good water resistance
• Natural adhesiveness
• Thermal stability
• Transfer frictional heat away
FRICTION

• When one body slides across another a resistive force must be

overcome. This force is called friction.
• Two types of friction
• Solid friction
• It occurs when the two bodies are rigid
• Fluid friction
• It Becomes between fluid layers
• Causes of Solid Friction
• Surface roughness: Microscopic irregularities called asperities exist.
The existence of this asperities causes friction
• Tendency of flatter surface moving in opposite direction to weld
together at high temperatures
• Fluid friction
• The viscosity of oil itself the source of friction. It does not cause wear
but it Generates a certain amount of heat and drag
• Viscosity is the resistance of fluid to flow
• The flow is said to be laminar where there is no turbulence
• The film may be assumed to be composed of extremely thin layers,
or laminae, each moving in the same direction but at a different
velocity
Effect of friction

• Work is required to overcome this friction, and the energy thus

wasted entails a loss of power and efficiency.
• Additionally, where there is solid friction, there I wear: a loss of
material due to the cutting action of opposing asperities and to the
shearing apart of infinitesimal welded surfaces.
Effect of temperature on viscosity

• As an oil is heated, its viscosity drops and it becomes thinner.

Conversely, an oil becomes thicker if its temperature is reduced. The
rate of change of viscosity relative to temperature called “Viscosity
index”.
• An oil that thins out less at higher temperatures and that thickens
less at lower temperatures is said to have a higher V.I. (viscosity
index).
