Conducting Experiment
Egg is the most famous breakfast. But have you ever watched an egg is sucking into a bottle? Air
pressure can do this. What do you now about air pressure? And how it works?
Objective:
Explain how air pressure works.
Discuss how air pressure affects our daily lives.
Problem:
How can we get the egg into the bottle?
Why is an egg suitable for this experiment?
How else could you change the pressure of the air inside the bottle?
How will we get the egg out?
How do we increase the pressure inside the bottle?
Materials:
 A hardboiled egg
 A bottle with a neck slightly narrow than the egg
 Some boiling hot water or a lit match
 A tray
 Some oil or water to lubricate the outer surface of the egg
Procedure:
Peel the egg and lightly oil the outside or using water to lubricate it
Light a match and put it in jar
Quickly put the egg on the top and wait
Result:
The egg starts to vibrate and then slowly sucked into the bottle due to an air pressure.
Why:
By adding the match causing the air inside to expand, this will push the egg up slightly and some
air will escape during vibration of egg. As the air then cools down again it starts to shrink, this
pulls the egg down and forms a good seal. This means that air pressure inside the bottle will
reduce allowing the air pressure outside to push the egg into the bottle. And because a boiled egg
is very rubbery and flexible you can get it into the bottle.
Note: you also can return the egg outside the bottle if it didn’t match, hold the bottle upside
down so the egg falls over the neck, then blow into the bottle as hard as you can, the egg should
then be pushed out by the higher pressure air inside the bottle.
Lesson plan

Summary
Students gain an understanding of air pressure by gaining the concept of how air pressure works
in our daily life. Students should collaborate to achieve the goal which is sucking the egg into the
bottle due to air pressure.

Learning Objectives
After this activity, students should be able to:

 recognizing air pressure

 Identify the effect of air pressure on objects

Materials List
 Hardboiled egg
 Hot water
 A bottle with a neck slightly narrow than the egg

Introduction:
Asks some questions to maintain engagement: do you love to eat egg at breakfast? Did you ever
use egg other than eating? Today we will see how we can use egg to understand science, to
understand air pressure. Take students into lab and wearing approved, a shirt that is cover the
stomach, and gloves. Or distribute tables as columns to fit 4 students. Divide students into group
of four
Procedure:
 Each group will have a hardboiled egg, hot water, and bottle
 The instructions are written on the board by asking the students to:
1. Fill the bottle by a hot water
2. Quick place the egg on top of the bottle
3. Observe the egg being pushed inside and have 5 mns each group discussed what
did they observe and why.
Questions:
 What is air pressure?
 How do you think the egg sucked into the bottle?
 What happens to the air pressure when air is heated?
After hearing students’ answers a small lecture may be done to explain about air pressure and its
effect on objects: The pressure outside and inside the bottle is equal. Filling the bottle with hot
water which let the air inside force the air out of the bottle. Placing the egg on top of the bottle,
the air outside is pushing down on the egg making the air outside and inside unbalanced. Due to
the higher pressure outside the bottle, the egg to be pulled inside the bottle. This is due to air
pressure.
Ask students how we can get the egg outside the bottle: See the above note
Note: the teacher can repeat the experiment in front the class during lecturing, or if not
safe to students do experiment, teacher can only do during explanation after asking
questions (interactive demonstration) instead of students conducting an experiment. The
water should be boiled so students should be careful and teacher should circulate to help all
groups for safety.

Building skills:
Communication:
During experiment students prepare materials together and have sharing ideas about what may
happen and why
Collaboration;
Students work together to let the egg pushed inside the bottle
Critical thinking:
Students should analyses what they have observed to get the answer and relation between what
happened and air pressure.
Creativity and critical thinking:
Students should think how egg should be pulled outside
Note: if egg is crushed a funny moments in science are normal and important and should
help students to see that science are relate to them
