INTRODUCTION

Internet is the network of networks that spans the entire globe. The internet had long been around in
some form by that point, with the first wide area network (WAN) having been established in 1965
and the first local area network (LAN) around 1983. Twisted-pair, coaxial and fiber optic cable had
been in development for many decades, and had already been broadly applied in the field of
telecommunications. But when all of these technologies converged with Berners-Lee’s model, the
modern web was born. Interest in the technology quickly ramped up, and the first commercial web
pages were up and running by the mid-1990s.WWW (World Wide Web) provides means and ways
for users to access the internet’s resources. However, a special program is required to launch the
desired website. These programs are known as web browsers example Mozilla Firefox and Internet
Explorer.

Web development is the work involved in developing a web site for the Internet (World Wide Web)
or an intranet (a private network).Web development can range from developing a simple single static
page of plain text to complex web-based internet applications (web apps), electronic businesses, and
social network services. A more comprehensive list of tasks to which web development commonly
refers, may include web engineering, web design, web content development, client liaison, client-
side/server-side scripting, web server and network security configuration, and e-commerce
development.

Among web professionals, "web development" usually refers to the main non-design aspects of
building web sites: writing mark-up and coding. Web development may use content management
systems (CMS) to make content changes easier and available with basic technical skills. For larger
organizations and businesses, web development teams can consist of hundreds of people (web
developers) and follow standard methods like Agile methodologies while developing websites.
Smaller organizations may only require a single permanent or contracting developer, or secondary
assignment to related job positions such as a graphic designer or information systems technician.
Web development may be a collaborative effort between departments rather than the domain of a
designated department. Since the commercialization of the web, web development has been a
growing industry. The growth of this industry is being driven by businesses wishing to use their
website to advertise and sell products and services to customers.

There are many open source tools for web development such as BerkeleyDB, GlassFish, LAMP
(Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) stack and Perl/Plack. This has kept the cost of learning web
development to a minimum. Another contributing factor to the growth of the industry has been the
rise of easy-to-use WYSIWYG web-development software, such as Adobe Dreamweaver,
BlueGriffon and Microsoft Visual Studio. Knowledge of HyperText Markup Language (HTML) or
of programming languages is still required to use such software, but the basics can be learned and
implemented quickly.

With the development and growth of technology everyone is connected together regardless of their
location. Today, companies of all sizes and industries are establishing a successful online presence.

As a new local furniture business in town and the web designer in my company, i have been asked to
develop a website to promote Fiji made furniture’s. In this task i will explain my primary role as a
Web Designer. Also, explain the first four phases of the web development life cycle (WDLC) and
how each phase will be carried out. The four phases consists of Website Planning, Content, Design
and Construction. Website construction will be carried out by using notepad and html. The website is
supposed to contain five pages which includes Home, About, Store Locations, Contact Us, and
Products page.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Website designers are people or are group of people who focus on the development of websites or
web pages for any organization, networking site or gaming site and many more. These are the
primary roles of a web designer.

 Plan site design by clarifying goals; designing functionality.

 Develops site navigation by categorizing content; funnelling traffic through content.

CONCLUSION
Certainly, i have gained many things from doing this project. After completing this project i was able to
explain my primary role as a programmer and describe the purpose of programming. Programming basically
involves activities such as analysis, developing, understanding, generating algorithms, and verification of
requirements of algorithms including their correctness and resources consumption, and implementation of
algorithms in a target programming language. Computer programmers have many different roles and
responsibilities to fulfil when carrying out their job. They tend to write, revise test, debug, and maintain the
programs that instruct computers how to carry out certain tasks. The number of roles and responsibilities the
computer programmer has rely on what type of position they hold in the organization or company they work
and their individual want to be as well as expected in field.

Moving on, i was able to develop a computer program using visual basic software that can calculate wages of
the workers. As a programmer, i used software development steps which are: program specification,
program design, program code, program test and program documentation to carry out the job with a user
friendly interface. The interface was made user friendly with descriptive labelling to help people understand
the program and assist people who may be involved with the program in the future. The payroll system
outputs the employees name, number of hours worked, gross pay and net pay after 8% FNFP deduction.
Through this project it is evident that proper planning is very important to get the desired outcome.

The computerised payroll system allows a company to process its payroll via dedicated payroll software. A
manual system can result in payroll errors and is usually a slow, laborious process. The computerised system
can offer a number of advantages, including increased accuracy and speed. Being a commerce and computer
student this project helped me to understand the basic knowledge of computer programming thus,
enhancing my skills and capabilities in perusing my future goal. This project has allowed me to learn &
understand elementary programming concepts, think flexibly, determine alternatives, and find new ways to
accomplish a given task. Also, to analyse and use fundamental knowledge to describe things which are
essential and important.
