Embroidery Machine: Embroidery is a decorative needlework. Embroidery can be done with both
hand and machine. In machine embroidery either a sewing or embroidery machine is utilized to
make patterns on clothing materials. It is generally used in product branding, decorative purposes
and corporate advertising.

Computerised Machine Embroidery: Modern embroidery machines are mostly computer controlled
and exclusively designed for embroidery. The embroidery machines normally comprise a frame that
holds the framed area of fabric with tension below the sewing needle and automatically moves it to
make a pre-programmed design which is saved in the machine.

Based on its capabilities, it requires various kinds of input from the user in a specified digital format
for sewing the embroidery designs. Embroidery machines generally have only one needle and
require the user to change thread colors during the embroidery process. In the case of multi-needle
industrial embroidery machines, threading has to be done before the running of the design and does
not necessitate rethreading. These machines require the user to input the correct color change
sequence before beginning to embroider. Some can trim and change colors automatically.

A multi-needle machine may consist of multiple sewing heads, each of which can sew the same
design onto a separate garment concurrently. Such a machine might have 20 or more heads, each
consisting of 15 or more needles. A head is usually capable of producing many special fabric effects,
including satin stitch embroidery, chain stitch embroidery, sequins, appliqué, and cutwork.

Functions of Computerized Machine Embroidery:

The fundamental steps for producing the embroidery designs using a computerized embroidery
machine are:

 Creating or obtaining a digitised design file

 Editing embroidery designs
 Loading final embroidery file into the machine
 Stabilising the fabric with adequate tension and position it on the machine
 Starting the embroidery process and monitor the process

 Design files: Digitised design files can be created on our own or purchased with embroidery
software. Generally, embroidery file formats come under two categories, namely the source
format, which is specific to the software and the machine format, which is particularly for a
specific brand of embroidery machine. Embroidery machines commonly support one or
more deign formats such as Tajima’s . dst, Melco’s .exp/.cnd and Barudan’s .fdr based on the
brand of the machine. Machine formats normally comprise primarily stitch data (offsets) and
machine functions (trims, jumps, etc.) and editing of these files is very difficult and needs
extensive manual work.
 Editing designs: After a design has been digitised, the editing of designs or combining it with
other designs can be carried out using the embroidery software. Most embroidery software
allows the user to supplement text rapidly and effortlessly.
 Loading the design: After completion of editing work, the final design file is loaded into the
machine in the form of floppy disks, CDs or USB interface cables. The design format required
by the machine will vary depending on the particular brand.
 Stabilising the fabric: During embroidery, wrinkling and other related issues can be avoided
by stabilising the fabric before the embroidery process. The fabric stabilising method
depends on the fabric characteristics, type of embroidery machine and the complexity of the
design. For better stabilisation of fabric, generally additional fabric pieces known as
‘interfacing’ are placed on the bottom or top of the fabric or both sides.
 Embroidering the design: Finally, the machine is switched ON and the embroidery process is
monitored continuously. Many designs necessitate more than one colour and may consist of
extra processing for appliqués, foams and other kinds of special effects.

5 Main Advantages of Computerized Embroidery Machine

1. Ease of use: Embroidery machine can easily be used, and need only a small amount of
manual participation. All the important tasks are efficiently performed by the machine. No
advanced skills or previous experiences are needed in order to maneuver these devices.
Even people with no prior knowledge of handling any sewing machine can operate them.
However, most manufacturers offer instruction manuals and CDs along with the devices, in
order to make it easier for users to understand how to use the machines.
2. Accuracy: Computerized equipments are made by embroidery machine manufacturers in
India in such a way as to make them able to reproduce designs in perfect quality. Such
devices can follow every detail without any flaws or errors. Once the process is stabilized
and the design file is loaded, the equipment can be started. In order to ensure that all the

5
changes are carried out properly, it is essential to supervise the sewing patterns of the
device.
3. Dependable speed: Embroidery machine parts suppliers are found to create these devices
fast enough, as compared to electrical stitching equipments. The images and pictures have
to be converted to a digital format, in order to let the patterns easily be sewn. With the aid
of digitizing software, such types of designs can be edited too. This type of application can
allow cropping, sketching, copying, moving and editing the designs in a proper way. You can
also add text or colors.
4. Additional sewing features: With the aid of these devices, any type of intricate patterns can
easily be stitched. Any kind of design can be digitized and transformed into sewing patterns
as per individual requirements. With computerized equipments, such designs can easily be
digitized. There are many companies which offer designing services with digitizing software.
Such designs can also be downloaded from various websites. Computerized stitching
machines make it easier to sew any kind of design onto fabrics.
5. Faster deliveries: With computerized machines, faster deliveries of sewing projects are also
possible. Whether you use a 12 head embroidery machine, a 9 needle embroidery machine
or a 23 head embroidery machine, you can get amazing stitches and create any type of
pattern that you like. Various kinds of file formats are used by varied computerized
equipments. ART, PES, VIP and SEW are some of the most-used file formats by sewing
machines. Knowledge of the right format for the right machine is necessary in order to
download the right patterns from websites.

What Are The Embroidery File Formats?

There are several types of embroidery file formats that can be used in Digitizer 10000 or Digitizer
Pro/MB.

.jan - The file that contains the embroidery's object properties. There is a "slot" for each object, so if
there are 15 objects in an embroidery design, there will be 15 "slots" in the .jan file. It is the file
format that is used while the embroidery is in its interim state. When you save an embroidery while
it is incomplete, you should save it as a .jan file, so you can easily modify it later.

.jef - The stitch-based file that is read by the MemoryCraft 10000.

.sew - The stitch-based file format used by MemoryCraft 5700, 8000, and 9000 machines.
.pes - A stitch-based file format used by Brother and Babylock embroidery home sewing machines.
.pec - A stitch-based file format used by Brother and Babylock embroidery home sewing machines.
.hus - The stitch-based file format used by Husqvarna/Viking embroidery home sewing machines.
.pcs - The stitch-based file format used by Pfaff embroidery home sewing machines.
.csd - The stitch-based file format used by Poem, Huskygram, and Singer EU embroidery home
sewing machines

.xxx - The stitch-based file format used by Singer embroidery home sewing machines.

.dst - The stitch-based file format used by Tajima commercial embroidery sewing machines.

6
.exp - The stitch-based file format used by Melco commercial embroidery sewing machines.
The list below for a brief overlook of which file format is compatible with which embroidery machine
brand. This list mentions the primary ones, and there are many more that have not been mentioned
here.

Needles use in embroidery machine

Machine embroidery needles are designed to work well with rayon and polyester threads. The
reason we need a special needle for machine embroidery is found in the eye. It is enlarged so that it
protects the thread as it rapidly goes in and out during machine embroidery.

For the most part, we will only need Embroidery needles with the exception of knits.

If we want to get fancy-schmancy and use metallic thread, then we will need to use Metallic needles,
leather needles for embroidering on leather, etc.

COMMON EMBROIDERY DEFECTS

Poor Registration

DESCRIPTION: Where the stitches and design elements do not line up correctly. The embroidery
sewing process sews different colors at different times. If the fabric shifts while one color is being
sewn, then poor registration will occur when the next color is sewn. Sometimes it is difficult to tell
the difference between poor registration, poor digitizing, and fabric “grin-through” or “gapping” due
to thread “pull”.

SOLUTIONS: Generally can be corrected by: 1) Digitizing properly (using appropriate underlay
stitches); and 2) Hooping properly (using correct backing to prevent excessive material flagging).

Fabric Grin Through or Gapping

DESCRIPTION: Where the fabric is seen through the embroidery design either in the middle of the
pattern or on the edge.

SUGGESTED SOLUTIONS: Generally, can be corrected by: 1) Digitizing properly (Using appropriate
underlay stitches, increasing stitch density, using different fill stitch pattern or direction, or

10
compensating for “Pull” of thread by overlapping fill and satin border stitches); and 2) Using
appropriate topping.

Missed Trim

DESCRIPTION: Where threads are left on the embroidery pattern between images or lettering.
Thread trims are digitized when changing colors and when moving from one location to another
using “jump” stitches.

SOLUTIONS: Generally, can be corrected by: 1) Digitizing properly (Using appropriate number of
trims, using appropriate tie off stitches, or replacing trimming knives when necessary); and 2) Hand
trimming the missed trims using trimming snips.

Bunching at Corners

DESCRIPTION: Where the corners of lettering or shapes are not sharp and crisp but are bunched up
or distorted. Usually caused by too much thread in the corners due to poor digitizing. This includes:
1) Not using appropriate stitch selection , 2) Not using “Short” stitches in corner, and 3) Poor stitch
balance – thread too loose.

SOLUTIONS: Generally, can be corrected by digitizing properly: 1) Using appropriate stitch selection,
and 2) Using “short” stitch cornering, and 3) Correcting stitch balance. American & Efird, Inc. 2002.

11
Poor Stitch Balance

DESCRIPTION: where white bobbin thread shows on the topside of the embroidery. Ideally, the
needle thread should be held on the underside of the seam, and not ever be pulled up to the
topside. Proper stitch balance can be checked on the underneath or backing side of the embroidery
by looking for 2/3 needle thread to 1/3 bobbin thread on Satin stitches.

SUGGESTED SOLUTIONS: Generally, can be corrected by: 1) Using quality embroidery needle thread,
2) Using quality pre-wound bobbins, and 3) Setting machine thread tensions correctly.

Fabric Damage

– Needle Holes

DESCRIPTION: Where the fabric is damaged around the corners of the embroidery. Caused by: 1)
Not using the correct type and size of needle; 2) Putting too many stitches in the same location; and
3) Not tearing of backing properly, allowing the fabric to be damaged as the stitches are pulled out.

SOLUTIONS: Generally, can be corrected by: 1) Digitizing properly; 2) Reducing the stitch count in the
corners; 3) Using the correct type and size of needle; and 3) Using a ball point needle as small as
possible.

12
Poor Coverage

Poor Stitch Density

DESCRIPTION: Where the stitch density is not thick enough and you can see through the embroidery
stitching.

SOLUTIONS: Generally, can be corrected by: 1) Digitizing properly (Using appropriate stitch
selection, using more stitches, and using underlay stitches); and 2) Using appropriate backing &
topping.

Evolution of Embroidery Technology – Recent Hardware Innovations

Melco Industries, Inc. recently released the EMT16 Plus, which introduces a significant upgrade to
their previous model. The new machine offers the advantage of embroidery heads that can be
stopped or started independently. Traditional multi-head machines require all heads to shut down if
one needs a bobbin changed, for example. The new model increases machine productivity by 50%.
Another factor that contributes to the machine’s efficiency is the Acti-Feed thread control system, a
monitoring system that adjusts the feed and tension automatically.

Another recent innovation was introduced by Coloreel. Their Embroline thread coloring attachment
applies color instantly to threads during the embroidery process. This method opens up a world of
possibilities in terms of color design and effects. In addition, it allows an embroidery machine to use
a single reel of thread per embroidery head, eliminating the necessity of maintaining a large stock of
threads and taking time to rethread the machine frequently. With a minimum of thread cuts and
lock stitches, the quality of the embroidery increases with this new technology.

While technology has revolutionized the embroidery business, there has also been a renewed
demand for hand-design techniques, such as bead work and sequins. To answer this demand,

36
Barudan has introduced a 4-in-1 machine that does sequin embroidery along with coiling, chain-
stitching, and cording. The company has also released a sequin attachment for round embroidery
heads that allows any needle on the rotary head to attach a sequin.

Another advance in embroidery technology decreases time spent on maintenance. Lubrication is a

time-consuming task, but newer machines are replacing gears with sealed bearings and belts that
don’t need to be oiled. In addition, many newer machines are quieter, more durable, and have more
options for accessories and attachments.
