The Beatles gave more live performances at the Cavern Club than at any other
venue: 292 to be exact. Nearly every photograph of The Beatles at the Cavern
shows the group with Reslo microphones on stage. They were ideally suited to the
group’s vocal sound; two singers could face into either side of a Reslo ribbon mic,
which fully amplified the vocals from both sides.
At the Cavern, The Beatles would have two microphones at front, one for the
song’s lead singer and another for the other two frontmen to dramatically add
face-to-face harmony; a third microphone was at rear for the drummer. In addition
to The Beatles, many other Merseyside groups from the era who played at the
Cavern used the club’s PA: Gerry and the Pacemakers, The Searchers, The Big
Three, Kingsize Taylor and the Dominoes, Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, Billy J.
Kramer and the Dakotas, and many others.
During this period, most Liverpool groups did not use their own sound equipment,
instead utilizing the PA setups that the venues would provide. The sound
equipment for the Cavern was provided and maintained by a local company
called Alpha Sound, owned by a promoter named Brian Kelly. According to
Mersey historian Bill Harry, “[Kelly] supplied the PA’s for practically all the major
clubs and dances on Merseyside.”

THE BEATLES ORIGINAL STAGE FROM
LATHOM HALL •
An original stage from concert venue Lathom Hall in
Seaforth, Liverpool, England, where The Beatles had their
first advertised gig and continued to perform 10 more
times. Lathom Hall became a venue that was associated
with Merseybeat. The Beatles first played there on May 14,
1960, in a show promoted by Brian Kelly when they were
still known as The Silver Beats. They played 10 more shows at the venue in January and February of 1961 as the official band name The Beatles. The
group’s final performance at Lathom Hall was on February 25, 1961, George Harrison’s 18th birthday.
Lathom Hall is also known for the infamous fight between Stuart Sutcliffe and a few other kids that resulted in John Lennon breaking a finger and Sutcliffe
suffering a fractured skull and concussion that some believe led to Sutcliffe’s death 16 months later. The fight started as a result of a few kids from the
concert picking on and beating up Sutcliffe, with Lennon and Pete Best coming to his rescue.
The stage measures approximately 6 by 3 meters and is accompanied by a letter from Brian Corrigan, who purchased Lathom Hall in 1989 and
reopened it as a throwback bar for Merseybeat fans.

THE BEATLES 1966 REVOLVER RECORD
STORE DISPLAY •
An easel-backed card stock in-store shop display from the 1960s
used to promote the release of The Beatles album Revolver. With
the exception of posters, it was highly unusual for EMI to
produce promotional material for any of The Beatles releases,
particularly in the mid to latter part of the group’s career, because
of their immense popularity.
The standee is an enlarged image of the front of the UK mono
vinyl LP sleeve. It was originally on display in 1966 at Beatties
department store in Wolverhampton, England. Shortly after the
album’s release, customer David Tonks walked into Beatties to
purchase a copy of Revolver. At the same time he spotted the
Revolver display and asked if the store would save it for him.
Tonks was told that the standee had already been promised to
someone else; however, that person failed to show and staff
gave Tonks the display after the promotional period was over.
His name is written on the reverse of the display.
The winning bidder will be responsible for pickup or shipment of
the item from the United Kingdom.

THE BEATLES 1964 COW PALACE CONCERT DRUMHEAD •
A vintage Ludwig brand bass drumhead bearing The Beatles logo. The drumhead
and the backup kit to which it was fitted were supplied by Ludwig through Coast
Wholesale Music Company via a representative named Donald “Don” Johnson for
The Beatles concert at the Cow Palace Arena in San Francisco on August 19, 1964 –
the opening concert of The Beatles’ first North American tour. Following the concert,
the backup kit was returned and the skin bearing The Beatles logo was removed and
later gifted to Coast Wholesale VIP client Ken “Kenny” Williams, owner of the
prominent San Francisco store Drum Land, where it was then displayed on the store
wall for three decades. The drumhead is accompanied by a letter and 1996 essay
from Williams explaining the history of his Drum Land store and the drum skin as well
as a copy of a 1975 article from Entertainment News showing the skin on the wall of
the store. Also included with this lot are a signed 1997 letter from Ludwig marketing
representative Charles Heuck verifying operational details and Johnson’s
employment at Coast Wholesale during the concert timeframe and a copy of a
signed letter from Johnson verifying delivery and setup of the drum kit at the Cow
Palace and the subsequent removal of The Beatles logo skin, which was then gifted to
Williams.

preservation, the ball has been stored and protected from light and maintains in its
current condition. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Flores, outlining

McCartney as they fit the boisterous and echoing tone of the song. The designs were executed on a double-
page lead sheet (with handwritten corrections in pencil) containing printed lyrics and music for the song
“This Time” from the crime movie Hot Millions (Milberg, 1968), a film released only a couple of months prior

JOHN LENNON AND YOKO ONO BED-IN FOR PEACE “BAGISM” DRAWING BY
LENNON, SIGNED BY BOTH, WITH FILM •
A caricature and almost abstract drawing of John Lennon and Yoko Ono titled “BAGISM” done by Lennon, signed
“John Lennon ‘69” and also by Ono on the bottom right. The drawing is featured in the couple’s 1969 Bed-In for
Peace documentary as part of their demonstration against the Vietnam War. The drawing can be seen hanging on the
wall behind the couple. The bed-ins, which lasted two weeks at two hotels in Amsterdam and Montreal, received a lot
of press coverage at the time.
The term “Bagism” originated from Lennon and Ono in the late 1960s as part of their peace campaign against the
war. Its meaning derives from the idea of living in a bag and preventing others from judgment based on physical
appearances such as skin color, gender, etc. As a result, one would hear only the entirety of a person’s message,
without being prejudiced by stereotypes that may arise from their outward appearances.
The drawing is unframed. Accompanied by a copy of the film.

PAUL McCARTNEY STUDIO-USED HANDWRITTEN LYRICS TO “HEY JUDE” •
A plain sheet with handwritten lyrics to the 1968 Beatles hit “Hey Jude” written by Paul McCartney in black
felt pen and used in studio for recording. The lines in the lyrics are numbered from 1 through 4, with

the recording at Trident Studios, London, in July 1968 and later gifted them to a studio engineer.
McCartney famously wrote the song for John Lennon’s son Julian as a source of comfort during the divorce
of his parents John and Cynthia Lennon. The song was originally called “Hey Jules.” The non-album single
was The Beatles’ first release on their Apple record label and a highly successful debut. It went on to be
nominated for the GRAMMY Awards of 1969 in the categories of Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and
Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.

GEORGE HARRISON CASSETTE TAPE WITH HANDWRITTEN LETTER •
A letter and a Ry Cooder audio cassette that George Harrison wrote and sent from his home studio at
Friar Park, Henley, England, in 1988. Harrison sent the letter to recording artist Sylvia Griffin and sound
engineer Renate Blauel after a meeting at a party. It is written on Friar Park Studios stationery and simply
dated “Wednesday.” Harrison begins the letter with “Dear Renate & Silvi? (sounds like a circus act!).” He
then discusses the Cooder songs that are featured on the audio cassette, saying that the tunes from
Cooder’s Chicken Skin Music are quite old, but “I send them for the hell of it - so you can really ‘get into’
the accordion - man! (women!)”
Accompanied by a typed letter of authenticity from Griffin and a copy of her “Love’s a State of Mind”
single featuring Harrison on slide guitar. The guitar part was recorded at Friar Park Studios.

6 in the charts. Harrison was later sued for copyright infringement by music publisher Bright Tunes for his 1970 hit “My Sweet Lord,” which carries the same
melody as The Chiffons’ song “He’s So Fine.”

GEORGE HARRISON OWNED AND PLAYED UKULELE •
A Hawaiian ukulele manufactured by Duke Kahanamoku and owned and used by George Harrison.
Harrison gifted the ukulele to Jeremy Chamberlain, who was working as a subcontractor at Friar Park,
Henley, in December 1999. Chamberlain was hired to put up the family Christmas tree and was chatting
with Harrison about a good place to buy a ukulele for his nephew. According to an affidavit signed by
Chamberlain, before he left the house, Harrison came out playing the ukulele. Harrison explained that he
had bought it in Hawaii years ago and his guitar technician had sorted it out, and Joe Brown had recently
used it for a recording. Harrison said that it would make a good gift for Chamberlain’s nephew.
The lot is accompanied by a gift tag that has been signed by George and Olivia Harrison. George has
added the message “To Jem – thanks a lot – love and Happy Christmas” and also drawn an Om symbol and
a cross. Also accompanied by numerous color photographs that Chamberlain took on the grounds of Friar
Park when he was working there. The ukulele is housed in its original case.

GEORGE HARRISON 1960s OWNED AND USED
STEERING WHEEL
A wood-rimmed steering wheel with three slotted aluminum spokes owned and
used by George Harrison and likely came from his Jaguar Mark 1. The steering
wheel was given to Alan Herring, a former employee of Harrison’s. According to
Herring, Harrison gifted him the wheel sometime between 1967 and 1968 when
he was moving things around at his Kinfauns home in Esher, Surrey, England.
Harrison warned Herring about a nick in the laminate on the wood rim that catches
the user when the wheel runs through his or her hand. Both Herring and Harrison
shared a passion for cars, and Herring owned a couple of Jaguars that Harrison
enjoyed being driven in as well as a Ford Anglia Estate that Harrison would ask to
be driven in if he wanted to go incognito.
