UNIT 5 States of Matter

Exercise 5.1 Solid, Liquids and gases
1. Complete the sentences.
Solids, Liquids and gases are called the three states of matter.
In solids the shape and the volume stay the same. Solids cannot be
compressed and they do not flow.
Liquids always take the shape of the container they are in.
They cannot be compressed-their always stay the same.
Liquids can be
Gases do not have a fixed shape or a definite volume. They can be easily
compressed.

2. Devon has been asked to test five materials to see if they are solid,
liquid or gas. He has carried out some simple test on some of the
materials. He has not yet completed his test.
This is his results table.

A yes yes
B yes yes
C Yes
D yes Yes
E yes
A. Is material A a solid, liquid or gas? Explain your answer
I think that material A is a gas because the gas can compress easily and
can flow.
B. Is material B a solid, liquid or gas? Explain your answer
I think that material B is a liquid because the liquid flow so that means
that take the shape of the container and the volume stays the same.
C. Devon thinks that material C is either a liquid or a gas. Which one other
test would you carry out to find out Which it is? Explain your choise.
I think we should do a test on whether can be compressed.
D. Devon thinks material D is a liquid. Is he correct? Explain the reason for
your answer.
I think that he is correct because the liquid flow and the volume always is
the same.
E. Devon knows that material E is no a gas. Explain how he knows this.
Devon knows that because a gas never has a definite volume.
F. What test should he do to decide if material E is a liquid or a solid?
Explain your answer.
I think we should do a test whether they have a definite shape.
