Be specific and answer to the point. All questions can be answered

in less than 50 words.
1. Match column A with B and C (1 mark for each correct answer):

2. There is block at the centre of a room whose temperature is maintained at 80oC
always. There is also air and water in the room. Temperature of air and water is
25 0C initially. The mass of air, water and metal block is equal to each other’s.
What will be the temperature at equilibrium? Tick the right option from the 4
options given below and give reasoning in support of your answer. (Assume
walls of room to be adiabatic)

(a) Between 25 and 80 o C

(b) Equal to 80 oC.
(c) May reach 80 o C
(d) (2x25 + 80)/3 oC

Correct option: a
Reason: It may lies between 25 and 80o because metal will lose the heat. And air,
water will gain the heat. To find out the equilibrium temperature we have to
know the heat transfer coefficients.

3. On a rectangular shown in figure below, the pressure varies along the length
(from A to B) according to the equation p(x)=3x2 + 2x (where p is in Pa and x in
mm). If pressure at end B is 751 kPa, answer the questions that follow:
a. What is the length of plate?
b. What net force acts on the plate if there is no variation in the y direction
and W=100 cm?
(Please use the space provided for your calculations. If you are giving this
test online, you may choose to just write your answer in space below.)

W B
A

Answer a:

15.49 Cm

Answer b:

1549 Pa-Cm2
4. Which curve represents the heat transfer rate from insulated (a) externally
insulated cylindrical pipe (b) flat Plate (c) internally insulated cylindrical pipe?

a c

Heat
Transfer
Rate

b
d

Insulation Thickness

Answers: (a) externally insulated cylindrical pipe: a

(b) flat plate: b
(c) internally insulated cylindrical pipe: d

5. Tumblers in case A, B and C in Figure below are filled with the same fluid upto
the same height h. If the fluid density is d and acceleration due to gravity is g,
answer the following questions:
(i) What is the static pressure acting on the base of the tumbler in each of
the case given?
Case A: d*g*h
Case B: d*g*h
Case C: d*g*h

(ii) If the base area of the tumbler in all the cases is same and equal to a,
what is the force acting on the base?
Case A: d*g*h*a
Case B: d*g*h*a
Case C: d*g*h*a

(iii) Which Weighing Pan will show the maximum reading and why?
All will show the same reading because the total force acting on the each
pan is same.

6. There is a small air bubble and a bigger air bubble at the bottom of a tank filled
with a fluid of zero viscosity. Which of them will rise faster to the surface and
why?

Answer: When there is no viscous force the

total force acting on the bubble is same so
both will rise to the surface at the same time.

7. Explain the difference between a solid body and a fluid response to a shear stress.
How are the forces related to the deformation in respective cases?

Answer: Fluid will not give any response to the shear force but solid bodies will
offer resistance to the Shear force.
8. How do you differentiate a property with a flow function? Which of the
following are flow functions and which are property:
c. Specific heat
d. Convective coefficient of heat transfer
e. Density
f. Turbulent viscosity
Answers:
Differentiation: Flow Functions will change based on flow condition but
properties will not change based on flow conditions

Classification:
a. Specific heat: Property
b. Convective coefficient of heat transfer: Property
c. Density: Flow Function
d. Turbulent viscosity: Flow Function

9. What is the use of following on a diesel engine:

g. Turbocharger
h. SCR system
i. EGR system
j. Charge Air Cooler
k. Crankcase Ventilation System

Answers:

a. Turbocharger: Exhaust gases are used to run the turbine so that extra
power can be developed.

b. SCR system:

c. EGR system: Exhaust gases are used to preheat the air.

d. Charge Air Cooler:

e. Crankcase Ventilation System: It is used to remove the harmful gases

from system.
