pathogens and the development of HCAIs.

corresponds to indications during care delivery that are justified by the risk of germ
transmission. To minimize differences in the way they are understood and applied by health-
care workers, trainers and observers of hand hygiene practices it is important that hand
hygiene indications become universally understandable.
There should be no room for doubt or interpretation by health-care workers and, additionally,
if hand hygiene practices are to be evaluated and fed back to ensure sustained improvement,
it is essential that observers have a clear understanding of the right indications for hand
hygiene.
