COURSE OBJECTIVES
1 To learn the physics behind x-ray imaging and computed tomography (CT).
2 To understand the hardware and techniques involved in nuclear imaging.
3 To learn the properties and techniques in ultrasound imaging.
To understand the physics behind magnetic resonance and the techniques in resonance

imaging.
5 To understand the different parts of medical imaging systems and its working principle.
COURSE OUTCOMES
Upon completion of the course, students shall have ability to

CO1 Understand the physics behind x-ray imaging and computed tomography (CT).
CO2 Understand the hardware and techniques involved in nuclear imaging.
CO3 Describe the properties and techniques in ultrasound imaging.
CO4 Understand the physics behind magnetic resonance and the techniques in resonance

COURSE CONTENTS
UNIT –I X-RAY AND CT 9
Hrs
Production of X-rays, X-ray tubes and generators-Screen film and digital radiography, mammography-
CT system design, Hounsfield unit, modes of acquisition-CT reconstruction: filtered back projection,
micro CT.
UNIT –II NUCLEAR MEDICINE
9Hrs
Radioisotopes, radionuclide production-types of detectors, scintillators, gamma camera-Emission
tomography –positron emission tomography (PET) and Single photon emission computer tomography
(SPECT)- Dual modality imaging – SPECT/CT and PET/CT.
UNIT -III ULTRASOUND
9Hrs
Characteristics of sound, interactions of ultrasound with matter-Ultrasound transducers, ultrasound
beam properties, image data acquisition-Modes of image display and storage-Doppler ultrasound,
intravascular ultrasound techniques-Ultrasound image quality and artifacts.
UNIT –IV MRI
9Hrs
Basic concepts of MR physics, spin polarization-Resonance, relaxation, spin echoes, gradient echoes-
Spatial encoding using magnetic field gradients, k-space and image reconstruction-MRI scanner
hardware, functional MRI, MR spectroscopy.
UNIT -V OTHER IMAGING TECHNIQUES 9
Hrs
Spectroscopy techniques: light source, optical fibers, monochromator,filters and polarizer- Real time
spectroscopy techniques, fractional flow reserve measurement techniques-Magneto encephalography,
optical coherence tomography-Infrared imaging: Thermal radiation, single photon detectors,
Thermographic scanning systems, clinical thermography and its applications
