This observation report summarizes observations of 3 English language teachers. For the first teacher, strengths included acting as a facilitator to encourage speaking without fear of errors, and providing engaging activities. Suggestions were to reduce distracting sounds and ensure passive students are included. The second teacher was observed correcting homework and encouraging note-taking. Students expressed affection for the teacher. No major improvements were noted. The third teacher grouped vocabulary thematically, elicited rather than provided answers, and used games like Kahoot for motivation and knowledge checks. A suggestion was to penalize errors less intensely.

Strengths observed - Teacher acted as a facilitator, not as a controller. - Promoting quantity, not quality; in other words, teacher encouraged students to speak freely, without their fear of incorrect pronunciation or local accents. - Teacher provided lots of interesting activities (guessing game, role-playing, opinion sharing…), which helped attract and maintain students’ attention. - Well-prepared materials and aids. Suggestion for improvement - The PowerPoint slideshow had some unnecessarily noisy and distracting sound, which may disturb students’ attention for the lesson. - One weakness of facilitator is that teacher cannot put enough attention into passive students, and those students may be completely ignored throughout the activity. Therefore, it is sometime better to choose pair work rather than group work or whole-class work. - Some words were misspelled (catologue catalogue).
Ms. Thao Nguyen, IELTS P (11/7/2019)
Strengths observed * This is a review session so teacher spent most of the time correct her students’ homework; nevertheless, there were still some strengths which were observed. - After two observations of the same class, it is clear that teacher always manages to evaluate students’ performance constantly with various methods. - Teacher usually encouraged students to take note new vocabulary, which is crucial in the memorizing process. - As mentioned last time, Ms. Thao’s connection with her students is so amazing that they even bought her a cup of bubble tea “because we love you”, said one of the student.
Suggestion for improvement
- No major problem spotted. Ms. Chau Nguyen, TOEIC 2 (13/7/2019) Strengths observed - Teacher grouped vocabulary into different field, in which words are related to each other. - Teacher always aimed to elicit answers from students rather than directly show them the correct responses. - Teacher manually checked students’ homework, which may stimulate them to do their homework more regularly. - Good use of Kahoot which is not only a way to motivate students but also a chance to quick-check their knowledge.
Suggestion for improvement
- Teacher should not emphasize student’s fault too intense unnecessarily, instead we can penalize them (force them to sing) to warn them not to repeat their faults.
