Grammar and Vocabulary : If I had a million dollars by Barenaked ladies

Week 14th-17th April:


Days 1 and 2 Our song: If I had a million dollars by Barenaked Ladies
Members of the group: Brayden Hampstead, Eva Fraga, Paulina Sicius
and Ana Gómez
Day 1: Grammar: Identify all the tenses in the song and color-code them.
That is assign one color to each tense being used in the song. Then explain
the use of the tense /tenses.

I have used our book Gateway to look for the grammar uses and tenses.

Well I'd buy you a house (I would buy you a house)

I'd buy you furniture for your house (maybe a nice chesterfield or an ottoman)

I'd buy you a k-car (a nice reliant automobile)
And if I had a million dollars I'd buy your love
If I had a million dollars I'd build a tree fort in our yard
If I had a million dollars you could help, it wouldn't be that hard
If I had a million dollars maybe we could put a little tiny refrigerator in there somewhere
(You know we could just go up the and hang out)
(Like open the fridge and stuff and, girl, there'd be foods laid out for us)
(With little pre-wrapped sausages and things, hmm)
(They have pre-wrapped sausages but they don't have pre-wrapped bacon)
(Can you blame them? Yeah)

I'd buy you a fur coat (but not a real fur coat that's cruel)

Well I'd buy you an exotic pet (yep, like a llama or an emu)

Well I'd buy you John Merrick's remains (all them crazy elephant bones)
And if I had a million dollars I'd buy your love
If I had a million dollars we wouldn't have to walk to the store
If I had a million dollars we'd take a limousine ‘cause it costs more
If I had a million dollars we wouldn't have to eat Kraft dinner
(But we would eat Kraft dinner)
(Of course we would, we'd just eat more)
(And buy really expensive ketchups with it)
(That's right, all the fanciest dijon ketchups, hmm)

Well I'd buy you a green dress (but not a real green dress, that's cruel)

Well I'd buy you some art (a Picasso or a Garfunkel)

Well I'd buy you a monkey (haven't you always wanted a monkey?!)

The tenses
 Red: Past simple :had
Blue: would + infinitive , wouldn’t infinitive
Green: Could + infinitive
 They use those tenses because we are talking about improbable
hypothesis about the future.
 This is the second conditional. We have one improbable imagined
situation for the future: having one million dollars in the past simple
 and its consequences. They use would and could+ infinitive
 It’s not very real /probable situation but it’s possible. You could win the
lotto.
 They are talking about all the things they would do with the money.
Yellow: Present simple.
 It is also used with a verb of thinking (state verb) You know..
 They use the present simple to talk about a general fact, to talk about
something that exists. (pre-wrapped sausages) or does not exist (pre-
wrapped bacon)
Can: modal purple
 It is used to ask for possibility: Is it possible to blame them ?
(blame:culpar)
Brown present perfect
 To talk about something that started in the past and still continues now.
I wanted a monkey in the past and still want it now.

Day 2: Vocabulary: New words or expressions that I found in the song and


look them up.
I have used wordreference.com , Wikipedia and google images.
I have also looked for names in capital letters in Wikipedia

Chesterfield: a type of couch or sofa

Ottoman: furniture, cushioned seat

K-car: (I found it in Wikipedia) a car from Chevrolet from


1962 . An old model of car.

Fort: old military structure.


Yard: garden outside a house.
Reliant: dependent
Hang out : spend time together (very informal)
Lay out: arrange, set out.
Pre-wrapped: previously packed,in a packet

Blame : say someone is responsible for something bad (culpar)

Llama :

Emu

Remains: corpse, dead body.

Fancy :expensive, high quality

Dijon: city in France. Dijon Mustard is typical sauce from there.

Kraft: American food producing company

Picasso famous Spanish Painter

Garfunkel: American singer from the 70’s and member of a group called Simon and Garfunkel.

John Merrick: His real name was Joseph Merrick.He was called the Elephant Man because of
his severe deformities. He was brought to different places in England to show his deformities
