Letter To Congressional Leadership - Normal Democratic Process
Letter To Congressional Leadership - Normal Democratic Process
Dear Speaker Pelosi, Minority Leader McCarthy, Senate Majority Leader McConnell and Senate
Minority Leader Schumer:
We commend you on the swift action you took to develop three unprecedented stimulus packages
to help our country through this devastating pandemic. Not only was each COVID -19 stimulus
plan bipartisan, it tackled many of the critical lifesaving issues facing Americans today. At a time
when our country is under massive pressure, we thank you for your impactful leadership in
working towards solutions.
Unfortunately, this pandemic is far from over. Across the country, our fellow Americans are
adapting to a new, uncertain, and difficult way of life. To protect the health and welfare of our
communities, we must all adapt to new ways of interacting in every facet of life from socializing
to conducting business, to legislating. These changes come with growing pains. We must carefully
consider our next steps to ensure that every communities needs are met during this trying time.
From the conception of our nation’s democratic system, the U.S. Congress has always been the
heartbeat of the people. Central to that structure is a normal deliberative process that allows each
Member of Congress to present and defend the needs of their constituents. In order to achieve that,
we ask that all members are given the legislative text of bills with time to review, the time to give
meaningful input to party and committee leadership, and reasonably advance notice on legislation
coming to the floor.
Although there have been extenuating circumstances in the last several months necessitating the
suspension of that process, our communities work best when everyone’s voices are heard. As we
continue to legislate negotiate further supplemental packages we request that leadership adheres
to the normal democratic legislative process as much as possible. We look forward to doing the
peoples work as elected officials together.
Sincerely,
