Piles is a rectal and anal condition/disease also known as ‘Hemorrhoids’. They

are of two types, internal and external hemorrhoids. Internal hemorrhoids or
prolapsed hemorrhoids are not felt since they remain in the anal canal. Most often
it is the external hemorrhoids that protrude from the anus which pain, itch and
bleed. In India, at least a million new cases are recorded, every year making it
one of the most common health conditions. The contributing factor in their
numbers is due to higher intake of processed foods and increasing sedentary

 Treatment
Piles is classified into four grades:
 Grade I - Hemorrhoids bleed and may protrude into, but do not prolapse out of,
the anal canal. They are not visible
 Grade II - Hemorrhoids prolapse/get pushed out on passing stool but they will
also return unaided.
 Grade III - Hemorrhoids require manual reduction. Known as prolapsed
hemorrhoids, they appear outside the anus but can be easily re-inserted into the
rectum.
 Grade IV - Hemorrhoids cannot be reduced/pushed back. They are permanent
prolapse and remain outside of the anus.
The treatment of the piles depends on which of the above Grade it belongs
to. Initially, the condition maybe treated with dietary changes and medicine
but incase of no improvement then a day surgery may be needed.
