INTRODUCTION

As project the syllabus prescribed by the Saurashtra University I have taken my training work
at “THE GUJARAT SIDHEE CEMENT LIMITED” Under the subject of general
information.

The brand name of this industry is “SIDHEE” main objective of this unit is to supply of
Cement to all India and other countries.

In M.B.A.-III I have been visited G.S.C.L. at Veraval. My permission application was


accepted. And I was given permission to visit company by Mr. Ramesh Sir who is the
personnel department if this company. The staff of this company is very kind they provide me
important and valuable information during visit I got very good treatment and training from
this company.

History of Industry

In India, manufacturing of cement was first started in Madras in 1904.First three companies
were started in 1912-1913 and real beginning was started. When the plans started there were
21 factories with an annual capacity of 328 million tons. After 1949 the cement industry had a
complete interference of govt. the production, distribution and price of cement and this
hampered the growth of industry. It was only in 1977 that govt. announces 12% post tax
return on net worth, which was fair enough, and retention price would be fixed to ensure it.

The real impetus was provided when partial decontrol was announced in 1982. Through this
policy all existing cement industry units were required to give up 66.67% of their installed
capacity as levy at controlled price. The most important objective of decontrol was to
eliminate black-marketing and bring down the price in the free market. It was in follow
through that the industry was fully controlled in 1989. In the last decade of 90s cement
capacity increased by more than twice. The industry was de-licensed in 1991, which
augmented its production in the very first year

SALIENT FEATURES

Gujarat Sidhee Cement Limited was originally set up as a joint venture between the Gujarat
Investment Corporation and The Mehta Group. G.S.C.L. plant is situated at Sidheegram,
Taluka:sutrapada, District: Junagadh, Gujarat which is about 35 kilometers away from
Veraval city.

G.S.C.L. plant uses the latest Dry Process pre-calcinations technology compare to
international standards. The state-of-the art plant makes use of machinery which is sourced
from reputed international companies. The plant, operating over 100% capacity, is also one of
India’s cost effective cement producers.

Because of its proximity to probandar and pipavav ports, it has competition access to the large
export markets in the Middle East countries, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh by the economical sea
route.

HISTORY & DEVELOPMENT OF UNIT

Gujarat Sidhee Cement Ltd. (G.S.C.L.) situated at Morasa near the Veraval in Gujarat is one
of the most modern Cement plant in the country. A part from the world wide Mehta Group.
“GUJARAT SIDHEE CEMENT LTD.” is one of the largest single point cement plant built
with state of art technology from F.L. Smith of Denmark. The world’s largest manufacture of
cement machinery. The plant is fully computerized and is based on fuzzy logic system. M/s.
F.L. Smith Co. of Denmark is also equity holders in the company.

The “GUJARAT SIDHEE CEMENT LTD.” was established in 29th November, 1987 that
time it was known as “CEMENT CORPORATION OF GUJARAT LTD.” was a joint sector
company.

C.C.G.L. was a pioneer unit of the G.S.C.L. this company has got a corporation certificate in
1973, but the regular production started in 1987. In the plant total investment 320 crores.

At the initial stage of establishment this company was under loss because of some technical
problems in 1992. MEHTA GROUP took the charge of this company and bonafied the new
name was “GUJARAT SIDHEE CEMENT LTD.” Before 1992 the company was registered
in BIFR. This company had taken loan from G.I.D.C., I.C.I.C.I. and therefore it was semi
govt. sector. But now a day’s company has Govt. “ISO-9002” certificate.

G.S.C.L. also adopted total quality control management. “GUJARAT SIDHEECEMENT


LTD. is largest exporter of the clinker in the country. It has larged dealer network in Gujarat.
“GUJARAT SIDHEE CEMENT LTD.” has been successfully launched in the state of
Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Kerala.

TIME KEEPING SYSTEM

The Time system has been introduced to checkup entry & existence of the employees wages
and salaries of employees are calculated through time keeping system. Through time keeping
system it can easily be known that number of workers is present during his shift

CEMENT MANUFACTURING PROCESS

► WHAT IS CEMENT ?

Cement is any substance, which can join or two or more substance together to from a united
mass. Cement as used in construction industries in a fine powder which when mixed with
water and allowed to set and harden can join different components or members to give a
mechanically strong structure.

Cement was discovered by Joseph aspalin of England some 100 year ago and named it
Portland cement

► PORTLAND CEMENT

It is a mixiture of limestone and clay matter the mixture is burned at a very high temperature.
Cooling the resultant product forms the “clinker and grinding the same to an impalpable
powder gives Portland cement. Essential constituents of Portland cements are- lime, silica
alumina and iron oxide. Some gypsum is added during composition to impart the desired
property of a particular type

1. OPC (ordinary Portland cement) - - - Developes enough compressive strength.

2. PPC (Portland Pozzolona Cement) - - - Pozzolonanas are clay matter either natural or
synthetic which when grinded with clinker and mixed water produces cementanious
compounds.

►TYPES OF PROCESSES

There are three type of manufacturing process of cement.


► Wet process
►Semi-dry process
►Dry process

● WET PROCESS

In wet process the raw materials are grinded with the addition of sufficient water so that the
resultant slurry contains 30-40% water, which is fed to the burning equipment. The raw mix
grinding equipments for wet process is necessarily a little different from that used in dry and
semi-dry process, but the crushing equipment are same. The kiln gas temperature is normally
below 200’C. dust by ESP. fabric filters are not used in wet process. Kiln as the dew points of
gas is quite high, which may lead to condensation of gas the collector, thus causing clogging
of bags.

● SEMI-DRY PROCESS

In semi-dry process the raw materials are grinded in the the dry state and the raw meal is
converted into modules by addition of 10-22& water and then fed to the burning equipment.
The gas outlet condition are suitable for the installation of ESP. dust emission from the semi-
dry process kiln is less than from and process kiln, as granules are fed to the kiln. Gas
temperature 100-150’c and dew point is also comparatively high around 60’c. filters are not
used as dust collector, for de-dusting the semi-dry process as it causes problem of clogging of
bags.

● DRY PROCESS

In dry process, the raw materials are grinded in dry state and grinded raw meal is fed directly
to the burning equipment. The temperature of the exit gas from suspension pre-heater is about
330-360’c. dust concentration in the exhaust gases leaving kiln is generally 50-57 gm/nm3.

Resistively level of the dust is also very high. Multi cyclones are used in some cases as a dust
collector but this dust collector dose not achieves prescribed emission limited. Outlet gases
from suspension pre-heater kiln are at high temperatures (360-360’c) and therefore needs

cooling prior to passing through any dust collector. When kiln gases are used for drying raw
material in the raw mill grinding station, cooling and of the gases result in the idle operation
condition for ESP. The amount of water required for the conditioning tower is about
150gm/kg. Water evaporation rate is generally 22kg/hr-m3at the inlet gas temperature of
350’c and 30kg/hr-m3 when the gas inlet temperature is about 400’c.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF MANUFACTURING


PROCESS

PROCESS :

The process of clinker\ cement production at Gujarat sidhee cement Ltd. sidheegram, can be
briefly described as follows.

MINING :

The mining of the limestone is done by CAD – computer aided mining development from the
very rich captive mines which has storage of limestone to sustain the plant for over 70 years.
In these captive mines, almost all the grades of limestone is available and a very little quantity
of additive is to obtained from outside. Proposals for changeover to the surface mining
technology are under consideration and would be soon implemented.

CRUSHING, STAKING & RECLAIMING :

The mined limestone is hauled through dumpers to a rotary hammer – impact type crusher
which crushes the limestone to a size of 80% up to -75mm size. Additive material is added to
the crushed limestone through an additive hopper which bypasses the crusher. The material is
passed on to the stacker via belt conveyors which stock the material in longitudinal layers.
The stacked material is lifted by the reclaimer which reclaims it by cutting transversely the
longitudinal stocked layers ensuring perfect blending and homogenizing.

RAW MEAL GRINDING:

The buffer stock of reclaimed material is store in the storage silos at the raw mill hoppers
along with the additive material in a different silo. The desired material is drawn through the
feeders and is fed to the vertical roller mill through air locking feeder. The vertical mill
consists of a rotating table upon which 3 rotating are hydraulically pressed. The material is
dried. Ground and transported by the hot kiln exit gases. The size of the pulverized material is
controlled by a static separator, which separates the oversized grits and sends it back on the
table for further grinding. The pulverized material is transported to the C.F. silo via energy
efficient bucket elevators.

STORAGE & BLANDING: (CAPACITY 20,000 M.T.)

The pulverized material is stored and blending and in the controlled flow silo. The blending
action is achieved by extracting the material from 7 outlets at a different rate. The extracted
material is conveyed to a weighing bin where it is further blended material is fed to the
preheated via bucket elevator.

PREHEATING, CLINKERISATION AND COOLING:

The kiln feed from the silo is fed into both the string of preheater. approximately 40% of the
feed is given to the preheater string where it get preheated by the hot kiln exit gases and gets
clinker up to 30% approximately. The balance 60% feed is fed to the calcined feed from the
preheater string is also added to the calciner. Here, about 90% calcinations is achieved. This
90% calcined feed is transferred to the kiln for the remaining 10% calcinations and sintering
where the flux materials and silica melt and react with lime to from for major clinker
constituents. This is achieved by firing pulverized coal in the rotary kiln.

The clinker coming out of the rotary kiln is at a temperature of 1300-1400ċ and hence cooling
of the same is required. This is achieved by pumping atmospheric air in the reciprocating
grate cooler by 9 nos. centrifugal fans. The clinker gets cooled and the gets heated up which is
used as secondary and tertiary air in kiln and proclaimed is respectively, and the excess air is
vented out at a lover temperature. The recuperation of the heat ion the cooler is in the vicinity
of 65-70%.

CLINKER STORAGE & TRANSPORT

The clinker, which is cooled to 100ċ -50ċ is stored in silo, which has a capacity of 40000
M.T. the clinker is transported to the silo by deep bucket conveyors. The silo for clinker is
salient feature of the plant, as the clinker dose not gets weathered. Another reserve silo of
2000 M.T. capacitive is provide to store specified products. The clinker from the clinker silo
is transported to clinker silos of the cement mils for grinding.

CEMENT MILLS:

The clinker is ground along with gypsum in the highly efficient combatant mills. The cement
mills are two compartment tube mills. In the first compartment, the grinding is done by
impact with balls and in the second compartment it is done by attrition with small grinding
media cylinders called cylpebs. The mill is swept with air, which transports the materials
through the mill. The cement is pumped to the cement silos the help of air-lifts. There are four
silos for cements of 5000 M.T. capacity each for storing different grade of cement.

PACKING PLANT:

The packing is done by automatic packers which have a capacity of 90 TPH each. There is
total Nos. of rotary packers. The packed bags each weighing 50 Kgs. Are directly loaded into
the trucks by belt conveyors and auto loaders.

RAW COAL & FINE COAL PLANT:

Raw coal is also stacked and reclaimed by a stacker and reclaimer hence ensuring a perfectly
blended raw coal. This is unique feature of the plant. The raw coal is pulverized in a vertical
roller mill, which is similar to that for the limestone.

CONTROL SYSTEM:

The plant is centrally controlled except for the packing plant through distributed control
system of opto22 USA supplied by M/s. Ramco systems, Chennai. The kiln cooler operation
is controlled by FUZZY LOGIC.

QUALITY CONTROL:

The quality control is achieved whit the help of a x-ray analyzer which gives accurate and fast
result. However, a fully equipped chemical and physical laboratory is also available where
continuous testing activity of raw materials &end product are carried out.

QUALITY MANAGEMENT:

Gujarat sidhee cement limited is accredited to ISO 14001: 2000 for quality management
system by RwTUV, Germany

ENVIROMENT MANAGEMENT:

Gujarat sidhee cement limited is accredited to ISO14001: 2004 for environment management
system by rwTUV, Germany.

PRODUCTS:

The plant produces Portland cement. 43- Grade Ordinary Portland cement. Fly ash based
Portland Pozzolona Cement and SRC cement.

There is an immense for the market above products in India as well as abroad. Gujarat sidhee
cement Ltd. is one of the leading exporters of the above products. In addition to this they are
also prestigious suppliers to sardar sarovar. Narmada dam and other projects.

POLLUTION CONTROL EQUIPMENTS:

The plant employs latest state of air pollution control equipments like Esps, bag filters &
chemjets – water pray system. The old generation pulse energized ESP has been modified to
the latest generation ESP. the controller for the transformers has been changed and a variable
inductance is provided. The equipment was supplied by M/s.BHA, USA. Also the gas
conditioning system supplied by M/s. caldyan, Germany has been installed with this which
conditions the gases in the down comer duct itself rather than the gas conditioning tower in a
conventional way.

CONTRIBUTION OF THE UNIT TO INDUSTRY

G.S.C.L. provides employment to nearly 394 employees directly. It also provides indirect
employment to large of people in form of transportators, retailer etc.

It also undertakes free plantation. Till now nearly 32000 trees of various kinds have planted
around the company area.

G.S.C.L. is one of the least polluting plants and continuously try to reduce the pollution as far
as possible.

G.S.C.L. contributes to the society by providing them with best quality cement clinker.
Through their exports it allows the nation to earn foreign exchange.

Capital budgeting is a process of making decision regarding long-term investment in fixed assets.
It is a long range planning to employ the available capital for the purpose of maximizing the long-
term profitability of the concern.

The key function of financial management is the selection of the most profitable assortment of

because any action taken by manager in this area affect the working capital & the profitability of
the firm for many years to come.

In SCL capital budget is prepared before two months in advance. All the head of department fill
their requirements for the department in the form & send it to the controller of department.

The requirement from every department are scrutinized by the controller of department and a
discussion is held with DGM to fill up the data in the form which contains budgets & its
particulars budget amount & justification and it is sent to the board of directors. Thus, the whole

INDUCTION

Recruitment is the generation of the application for specific post. It is a source for search of
an employee. It is also considered as a process of encouraging and stimulating the applicant to
apply for a job. Recruitment consists of inviting maximum number of applications for the
vacancy arising in the organization.

G.S.C.L. industries many workers in G.S.C.L. industry is a M.D. call for in interview and

SELECTION

In selection the applications are then scrutinized by the concerned head of the department and
application blanks are then send to the competent applicants. Applicants are required to fill

.GRIEVANCE HANDLING PROCEDURE

Grievance means complains of dissatisfaction arising among employees due to payment


policies, promotion, transfer, working conditions of company etc. the procedure of taking &
solving such problems is known as grievance handling procedure.

There is hardly a company r an industrial concern which functions absolutely smoothly at all
times. In some, the employees have complaints against their employers, while in others it is
the employers who have a grievance against their employees. These grievance may be real or
imaginary, genuine or false. broadly speaking, a complaint affecting one or more workers
constitutes a grievence.the complaint may relate to the quantum of wages, the mode of
payment ,payment for overtime work, leave interpretation of service agreements, working
conduction promotion, seniority, transfers, work assignments, or the food available in the
canteen.” where the points at dispute are of a general applicability or are of a considerable
magnitude they fall outside the scope of this procedure, that is, grievance handling procedure.

In G.S.C.L. mostly the management itself tries to sort out the problem of the employees & try
to solve it and if at all any problems still remains. The employees fill the grievance firm &
give it to his immediate superior. Which is than passed over to personal department? Here the
problem is analyzed and by mutual discussion. They try to arrive at suitable decisions.

TRADE UNIONS

Trade unions means that any combination of persons, whether temporary or permanent,
primarily for the purpose of regulating the relations between workers and employers, or
between workers and workers, and for imposing restrictive condition on the conduct of any
trade or business, and includes the federation of two or more trade unions.

A trade unions is device which enables a groups, a class in industry or trade to bargain with
any other class or group on equal footing.

2. An instrument of defense against exploitation
3. An outcome of industrialization and implies class distinction.

Trade union is the combination of personal workers of employees whether temporary of


permanent.

G.S.C.L. has formal trade union. There is only one active labor union known as Gujarat
sidhee cement union. It is the only registered union which protects & fights for the rights of
the workers & also co-operate with the management.

PERSONNEL RECORDS

Personnel records is solution to many problems of identification and development of right


person for the right job at the right time. Personnel records is a stock of factual information
about workers. It's useful in decision making on specific personnel matters and also for
recruitment, evaluation, job analysis, selection, promotion, training....etc

GSCL has maintained a registered system for each and every employees' information. It
consist the details as per following,

PROMOTION & TRANSFER POLICY

As for as promotion of lower level personal and workings are concerned it totally depends
upon the ability and performance of workers and behavior of personal in the organization.

Transfer is generally affected it build up a more satisfactory work term and to achieve the
following purpose.

1) To satisfy such needs an organization as may arise out of a change in the quantity and
production.

2) To meet an employers own requests.

3) To utilizes properly the service of an employees.

4) To increase the versatility of the employees.

WORKING E.S.I. SCHEME

“Employees safety insurance (E.S.I.) is a short from of an employees state insurance” is


designed for financial benefit of the worker under E.S.I. employees & government are the
major contribution.

In E.S.I. there no E.S.I. Scheme but every employee is insured in oriented insurance co.

PROVIDENT FUND SCHEME

This manage P.F. scheme receiving story above Rs. 1000per month an employees who
becomes a number of P.F. scheme must be permanent employees. He has contribute his
8.33% of salary towards the P.F every month’s.

An employee also sets loan from P.F. in cash of marriage sickness house loan etc.

FACILITIES OF EMPLOYEE

The productivity of any organization depends upon the industrial relation. Industrial relation
means the relation between executive and employees of the unit. The G.S.C.L. possesses good
industrial relation. All the employees are quite satisfied with wage rates and other facilities
allotted by the organization. The unit provides the beneficial actives to each employee and his
family members in to types & they are as under:

STATUTORY & UNSTATUTORY;

Statutory means company has to follow it as per the rules of government but unsatisfactory
activities means which are not compulsory for unit but company like to provide such facilities
for it‘s employees. In G.S.C.L. there are various and unstatutory activities.

1) MEDICAL FACILITY

The unit has a separate medical center named “Sidhee Health Care Center” established near
colony with full eloped. The medical services are given by company without any charges to
employee 7 employee family members. In case of accident the company pays the full
expenditure for the treatment.

2) EDUCATION FACILITY

The unit its own English medium as well as Guajarati medium school situated at Sidhee Gram
Company circular, cultural and social activities are conducted at possible intervals for the
development student.

3) GUEST HOUSE AND CANTEEN FACILITIES:

To facilitate the guest of G.S.C.L. one guesthouse has been built which provide
accommodation reasonable rates.

One canteen is also being run by the G.S.C.L. provide foods at subsidided rate.

4) HOUSING FACILITY:

G.S.C.L. have well constructed and beautiful colony for their employees at sidheegram
having 198 family quarters. Free furnished quarters are being provided to the employees as
per the eligibility and requirement. Free water and electricity up to prescribed limits is being
provided to the colony residents.

5) TRANSPORTATION FACILITY:

G.S.C.L. provides transportation facilities to its officers and employees. Company has 2 its
own buses and 3 on contract from travelers of Veraval at interval of every low fair.

6) ENTERTAINMENT FACILITY:

The company has its own video cable where the members can enjoy hidden as well as English
movies.

CONCLUSION

After completion of my training at GSCL.i felt that point is unique and self sufficient.

The training has helped me to understand better how to relate our knowledge with reality,
competition and success.

The unit has provided me all valuable information related to my subject matter. I have got
heartly co-operation from all the departmental heads, staff members as well as all members of
GSCL during the entire training. I am satisfied of answers which they have given of all my
questions.
