Why sampling

• Need for accurate measuring systems

• Buyers of crude oil want good sampling systems

and accurate analysis to determined the product
specification:

- Density

- Total water content

- Contaminants

- Composition and quality

Why is mixing important?

LOW DENSITY CRUDE OR CONDENSATE

HIGH DENSITY WATER

Types of sampling

Automatic composite sampling of Virtually all hydrocarbon liquids Dry gas

crude oil products in pipelines and chemicals

Certifications and requirements

Certifications

Choice of location

Pipe top
• Correct positioning of sample probe

• Where do we take the Sample? 0,250 0,250

• Close to fiscal transfer point D

0,10
• Not close to bends or pipe wall
Recommended
• Take line-fill into account sampling region

• If possible in vertical lines Pipe bottom

a) Horizontal pipe b) Vertical pipe

Representative sampling through mixing

C1
Water in top half of pipe
• For water in oil the API/ISO definition is the
“concentration ratio” C1/C2 ratio

• C1/C2 ratio of 0,9 = good dispersion for

representative sampling Water in bottom half of pipe

Rating Measurement deviation

A

B Between ± 0,05 and ± 0,10

C Between ± 0,10 and ± 0,15

D Greater than ± 0,15

Conclusion

• A sampling system is not an add-on piece of

equipment, but a tailored system designed for a
specific application.

• The whole system is greater than the sum of its parts.

This certainly applies to good sampling systems. If
each item receives the necessary attention
representative sampling will be achieved.
