Experiment 6

Name :- Jaideep Kulkarni

Roll No:- 46
GR No:- 1710844

Aim:
To measure contact angle of different solvents on various surfaces and to
correlate with hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity of surfaces on different
surfaces
Chemicals used:
Glycerin, 0.1M dil. NaOH, Honey
Surfaces used for testing:
Bottom of glass and plastic beaker, leaf of Jackfruit tree
(Artocarpusheterophyllus), Rubber glove, surface of palm, tile, stainless steel
and wood.
Contact Angle and Wettability:
 When an interface exists between a liquid and a solid, the angle between
the surface of the liquid and the outline of the contact surface is described
as the contact angle ‘θ’.
 The contact angle (wetting angle) is a measure of the wettability of a
solid by a liquid.
 In case of complete wetting , the contact angle is 0 o
 If contact angle is between 0 o and 90 o, the surface is said to be wettable.
 If contact angle is above 90 o, the surface is not wettable.
 If contact angle is above 180 o, it is said to be a ultrahydrophobic surface,
as explained by lotus effect.
