DEPARTMENT & PROGRAM: BS Mechanical Engineering

COURSE CODE-COURSE NAME: 214401 Fluid Mechanics I CR: 3-0

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This is the first of the two courses offered in Fluid Mechanics. It Provides grounding in the fundamentals of
fluid mechanics, beginning with a study of fluid statics and then considering the physics governing the motion
of fluids. The specific aims are to introduce the physical processes which govern the behavior of fluids at rest
and in motion, to provide foundation in fundamental fluid mechanics in accordance with three fundamental
laws of conservation, to provide experience and confidence in problem-solving.

PRE-REQUISITE: Nil

CO-REQUISITE: 117401 Applied Physics

TEXT AND MATERIALS:

Textbook:
1. Fundamentals of Fluid Mechanics by Munson, Young, Okisshi, Huebsch, 6 th Edition by John Wiley &
Sons, Inc.

Reference Material:
1. Fluid Mechanics by Frank M. White, 7th Edition by McGraw Hill.
2. Fluid Mechanics by Yunus A. Cengel, John M. Cimbala, 2nd Edition by McGraw Hill.

RELEVANT PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES:

The course is designed so that students will achieve the PLOs:
1. PLO-01: Engineering Knowledge: An An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science and
engineering fundamentals and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering
problems.
2. PLO-02: Problem Analysis: An ability to identify, formulate, research literature, and analyze
complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of
mathematics, natural sciences and engineering sciences.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
1. Understand fundamentals of fluid mechanics.
2. Analyze fluid flow behavior by applying the mass, momentum and energy equations.
3. Apply the concept developed for fluid flow systems in order to solve complex engineering problems.
